A few teams had solid runs into the state playoffs while others are looking to improve their programs. With many of these teams replacing key senior graduates, who will step up their game going into this year? Here is part one of the top returning forwards to lookout for in northeastern North Carolina during the 2020-21 season.
DeSiree Askew (Hertford County forward, 2022)
DeSiree Askew is one of the many standout prospects in this part of the state that averaged a double double last year. As a sophomore, she put up 16 points, 13 rebounds, five steals, and one block per game for the Hertford County Bears. Her potential is endless because she simply gets the job done on offense and defense. The Bears were able to reach the second round of the 2-A state playoffs and won the Northeastern Coastal 2-A conference tournament title thanks to many great performances from Askew.
Jessica Stokes (Bertie forward, 2022)
Another player who posted a double double average during the 2019-20 season was Bertie forward Jessica Stokes. She put up 13 points, 11 rebounds, three steals and one block per game as a sophomore for the Falcons. As part of a 20 win team, Stokes helped lead the falcons to the Northeastern Coastal 2-A conference regular season title and a second round finish in the 2-A state playoffs. She’ll be expected to increase her output with the graduation of standout senior Dawaunti Combs.
Le’Asia Stanley (Edenton forward, 2022)
Like Askew and Stokes, Le’Asia Stanley posted a double double average last year and that led to Edenton finishing with the best record in the area. She does most of her damage in the paint, but has also show the ability to step out and knock down a few three pointers. Stanley put up 15 points, 13 rebounds, three steals and two blocks per contest for an Aces team that went 23-7. Her play helped lead Edenton to the fourth round of the 1-A state playoffs and you can expect them to have a shot at regionals this year.
