A few teams had solid runs into the state playoffs while others are looking to improve their programs. With many of these teams replacing key senior graduates, who will step up their game going into this year? Here is part one of the top returning guards to lookout for in northeastern North Carolina during the 2020-21 season.
Jamillian Johnson (Edenton guard, 2021)
Jamillian Johnson had an excellent junior year for the Edenton Aces putting up 14 points, six rebounds, three assists and five steals per game. She was named to the all-conference and all-district teams as she helped lead her team to a 23-7 record which included three wins in the 1-A state playoffs. With the return of her and standout forward Le’Asia Stanley, the Aces should be back in state championship contention in 2021.
Janeja Perry (Washington County guard, 2021)
Janeja Perry had a really good junior season for Washington County this past season. She made a huge impact on both ends of the floor leading the team in points and steals per game for the Panthers. Her play helped the team finish with a 10-10 record and reach the 1-A state playoffs. Next season, expect Perry to improve her scoring and play making ability which should help the Panthers improve their chances in the Albemarle 1-A conference.
Jayla Brumsey (Northeastern guard, 2022)
Jayla Brumsey is one of many guards that have the potential to be successful at Northeastern. As a sophomore, she contributed heavily on both ends of the floor whether it was attacking the basket or defending the passing lanes. With a majority of this past seasons team graduating, Brumsey has to step up next year if Northeastern wants to have more than eight wins in 2021.
