A few teams had solid runs into the state playoffs while others are looking to improve their programs. With many of these teams replacing key senior graduates, who will step up their game going into this year? Here is part three of the top returning guards to lookout for in northeastern North Carolina during the 2020-21 season.
Tyana Peebles (Currituck County guard, 2021)
Tyana Peebles had a really good junior season putting up 10 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals per game for Currituck County. She does a little bit of everything well from shooting to passing and defending. The Knights were able to win eight games during the 2019-20 season, but it wasn’t enough to reach the state postseason. It’s a challenge to win contests in the Northeastern Coastal 2-A, but the Knights could really improve with a scoring outburst from Peebles in 2021.
Anaya Harper (Northeastern guard, 2022)
Anaya Harper did some really good things as a sophomore for Northeastern and really started to come alive in the last few games of the season. She rebounds really well for a guard and on any given night, she was able to be the primary scoring option for her team. The Eagles will need big production out of her this upcoming season if they want to reach the state playoffs.
Ashley Jenkins (Hertford County guard, 2022)
Ashley Jenkins is part of a great returning cast Hertford County will have for the 2020-21 season. As a sophomore, she averaged eight points, two rebounds, and two steals per contest. She’ll be expected to be one of the primary facilitators on the Bears while also providing a secondary scoring option. With her return, the Bears should be in contention for a deep postseason run.
