A few teams had solid runs into the state playoffs while others are looking to improve their programs. With many of these teams replacing key senior graduates, who will step up their game going into this year? Here is part two of the top returning guards to lookout for in northeastern North Carolina during the 2020-21 season.
Emma Richards (First Flight guard, 2022)
Emma Richards is part of a solid group of players returning for First Flight this year. As a sophomore, she averaged 11 points, four rebounds, four steals, and two assists per contest helping the Nighthawks finish 11-11. This upcoming season is a big one for the rising junior and her impact on both ends of the floor could help First Flight reach the 2-A state playoffs.
Aniyah Rainey (Northeastern guard, 2023)
Aniyah Rainey is one of several 2023 prospects in northeastern North Carolina that make a quick impact as a freshman. She had many games with double figure scoring and is poised for a big sophomore year for Northeastern. While the Eagles finished this past season with an 8-11 record and are losing a lot of seniors to graduation, they have a good stable of guards to work with in 2021. Rainey is capable of consistently having big games and Northeastern will need that from her this season.
Yazmonasia Boone (Bertie guard, 2022)
Yazmonasia Boone is set for a breakout junior season and Bertie will need that if they want to build on the 20 wins they had last year. She’s a knockdown three point shooter that had significant production in many of the Falcons biggest games. As a sophomore, she posted nine points, three rebounds, two assists, two steals, and one block per game. With the graduation of Bertie’s top scorer Dawaunti Combs, Boone will be tasked in increasing her role on the offensive end.
