Multiple teams were able to crack the double digit win total including one team that rode their momentum all the way to a regional and state championship. With all of that being said, who are some of the top returning guards in this area? Here is part one of the top returning guards to lookout for in the Roanoke Valley this year.
Aniya Heckstall (Southeast Halifax guard, 2022)
Aniya Heckstall had a really good season for Southeast Halifax and really came alive down the stretch with some huge scoring outputs. As a sophomore, she averaged 11 points, eight rebounds, and four steals per game for the Trojans. She put up double figures in 12 of her teams last 16 games and is poised for a breakout junior season.
Ella King (Roanoke Rapids guard, 2022)
Rising junior Ella King is another player that started to play her best basketball late in the season for Roanoke Rapids. The Yellow Jackets guard put up 10 points, five rebounds, and two steals per game while shooting 36% from three point range. She’s another one of the many 2022 prospects in the Valley that have made a huge impact on their program.
Ashton Garner (Halifax Academy guard, 2022)
Ashton Garner put up some solid numbers during the 2019-20 at Halifax Academy. She produced seven points, three rebounds, four assists, and four steals per contest as a sophomore for the Vikings. As part of a really good group coming back, Garner and her team should be able to improve on last years 17-9 overall record.
Jessie Martin (Northeast Academy guard, 2021)
Northeast Academy’s Jessie Martin had nice junior season helping the Eagles finish with an undefeated conference record. She put up 12 points, four rebounds, and four steals per contest as a junior and has a chance to really improve her numbers during the 2020-21 season. Expect Martin and her team to be right back in the conference title picture this year.
