One team was able to finish with over 20 wins and reached the state playoffs. With a lot teams replacing key senior graduates, who will step up their game going into this year? Here are the top returning players to lookout for in Carteret County during the 2020-21 season.
Cayman Montgomery (West Carteret guard/forward, 2021)
Montgomery is one of the top returning scorers in the area after putting up just under 10 points per game this past season for West Carteret. She also averaged six rebounds, three steals, and two blocks per contest and helped the Patriots finish with nine wins. With the graduation of Hartford commit Mackenzie Reed, West Carteret will need Montgomery to increase her scoring output and she’s very capable of doing so.
Madi Rose (East Carteret guard/forward, 2022)
Rose was one of the bright spots for an East Carteret team that struggled throughout the course of the 2019-20 season. The rising junior did average 7.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and 2.4 steals per contest last year and will likely be one of the teams defensive anchors. Expect her numbers to increase this season and it could lead to some improvement from the Mariners in the Coastal 8 1-A/2-A conference.
Haley Cousins (Croatan guard, 2021)
Cousins put up eight points, four rebounds, and two steals per game this past season for a Croatan team that had the best record in Carteret County this past season. The rising senior guard will be counted on heavily this year with the graduation of standout senior Kelly Hagerty. If Cousins can produce in a bigger role, the Cougars should be in position to repeat as conference champions and have a deep state playoff run.
