They don’t have to be flashy, though some are, they just need to be reliable, resilient and that coach on the floor that makes everything go, and when it all falls apart they are there to put it back together. These players all fit that description and though they may not be the stars of their teams they are so much more.
Destonie Tisdale-5’1”- Junior- Grimsley High School
The junior led a three small guard attack that was able to fully utilize her speed and quickness both with the ball in transition or in half-court sets or in full-court pressure defense to force turnovers. A complete point guard that has all the fundamentals and leadership needed to be successful at the position. She has great court vision and is a skilled passer and is very heady and makes few mistakes an important skill for a good point guard.
Amani Smalls- 5’2”- Senior- Reidsville High School
A heady point guard that scores at ease rather in transition or getting into the lane at will in the half-court. Super athletic and shoots the ball well from mid-range with a nice shooting form, she has all the attributes a team needs and can fill up the stat sheet with points, assists, steals and even rebounds. All-Conference and Area player who will push for All-State honors next season. Knows how to play the game and will have a productive senior season and attract college interest.
Tiona Wright- 5’4”- Carver High School
A product of hard work she has improved all her point guard skills and now is poised to be one of the top point guards in the area. Her ball-handling skills allows her to get wherever she wants to on the floor and she can finish in the lane at ease. She plays hard on both ends of the floor and is a defensive asset with her ball pressure and instincts which leads to steals and fast break points. She passes the ball really well and has learned to be a good leader, look for her to continue her improvement, and have a great season.
Ashleigh Williams- 5’1”- R J Reynolds High School
Another smaller point guard who plays bigger than she is as she is always in the mix and loves getting to the rim and has a special knack of scoring over and around bigger players. She understands the game and plays it with no fear uses her athletic ability to do what she needs to get done. Really good at organizing teammates and leading her team an attribute all the good ones have and she is one of the good ones. Look for big things from her this season.
Sydney Roberts- 5’5”- Junior- Southeast High School
The behind the scenes leader of a team that has won over 60 games in two seasons including a state championship and making it to another state championship. Just a heady player that understands what a team needs to win games and also has the big-game pedigree and just seems to make all the plays when they are needed. An excellent passer that can also score either inside the lane or from outside and a talented defender who just gets the job done whatever that job may be. A true coach on the floor and one who will just keep getting better.
