Continue ReadingAs a shooting guard, you have to understand and have the skills to put the ball in the basket be it at the rim or from a long-range. Traits associated with the good ones include confidence, smarts, offensive skills, and that swag and belief that you can score on anyone at any time and the next shot is going in. These players are the best at some if not all of these traits in the Triad and they all share one trait they all can put it in the basket with ease and regularity.
Hailey Blackwell- 5’6”- Senior- Greensboro Day School
Probably the best shooting guard in the area after being an All-Area, Player of the Year in the Conference and Honorable Mention All-State selection last season. Can score from anywhere on the floor, shoots the 3 point shot well, and has the ball handling to get to the rim with ease. Excels on the defensive end where she anticipates passes well and jumps passing lanes to the tune of 4 steals per game and when her shot is not available she is a solid passer. She has the skills to play both guard spots but seems to be more comfortable as a sharpshooting 2 guard and her skills and game suggest she is right.
Tatyana Childress-Senior- Winston Salem Preparatory Academy
A flashy skilled scorer that epitomizes what you would want in a 2 guard, skilled shooter, gets to the basket, confident, and has that scorers mentality that the next shot is going in. She plays the game hard but enjoys it and she loves putting the ball in the basket and her skills are such that she is very good at doing this. She is athletic and uses this to her advantage in transition and the open court. She understands how to get open where to find her shot and this makes her a valuable weapon and a tough cover for defending players and teams. Look for her to explode next season and for colleges that are need of a scorer to come calling.
Marissa Wooten-5’7”- Senior- Dudley High School
A tremendous athlete that uses her quickness and her natural gifts to be an excellent off guard. She shoots the ball very well whether from mid-range or from deep with great form and excels in the open court where her basketball and athletic skills combine to make her dangerous. She is the anchor on the defensive end where she can guard many positions well and gets into passing lanes and causes havoc that leads to steals and deflections that turn into points at the other end. She has great size for the shooting guard position and you can expect her to come out and have a nice senior season and attract the eyes of college coaches with the skills she possesses and her work ethic.
Regan Maynard- 5’8”- Senior- Page High School
This player could be overlooked because she plays a lot of forward for her team but it is her ability to play the off guard spot at her size that will have coaches at the next level interested. She is a skilled shooter and scorer and playing a lot at the forward spot enables her to learn to score in close in the lane and rebound both sought after qualities in a big guard at the next level. Her basketball IQ is also impressive as she understands the game and how to play it correctly and this enables her to make the plays she needs to make. She is going to be a solid player at the next level and expect college coaches to understand she has to play the forward spot but the good ones will see her guard skills and realize that she is perfect for their program.
Shaena Riddles- 5’8”- Senior- Northwest Guilford High School
Probably one of the top 3 point shooters in the area if not the best, on a team filled with shooters and that space the floor and move the ball well she is an almost automatic standstill 3 point marksman. She understands spacing and finds the open spots on the perimeter to launch her textbook form 3 point shot. Add to this her basketball IQ and her experience of playing in big games and being part of a successful program and you start to understand she knows what it takes to win. Though not blessed with the greatest athletic ability she uses her smarts and instincts to make plays and be in the right place at the right time. She is sound fundamentally in all areas of her game and when college coaches look at the entire skillset she has to offer and her knockdown shooting ability they will be looking to add her to their roster.
