There were many highlights from the instant impact of the 2023 class to the many programs that were able to reach the state playoffs in their respective classifications. With that being said, who are some guards that college coaches should keep their eyes on this year? Prep Girls Hoops NC takes a look at more of the top returning guards to watch out for in Johnston County during the 2020-21 campaign.
Sage Farmer (Cleveland guard, 2023)
Part of a 2023 guard pairing with a lot of potential, Sage Farmer was the second leading scorer for the Cleveland Rams as a freshman. She had some big scoring outputs especially late in the season against some high quality opponents in the Greater Neuse 3-A conference. Farmer is sure to be a big part of Cleveland’s program as she looks to help the Rams improve on their 10-16 overall record from this past season.
Brooklyn Waller (Cleveland guard, 2023)
The other part of Cleveland’s 2023 guard pair is their top returning scorer, Brooklyn Waller who posted 8.2 points per contest last year. She was their primary ball handler, got to the free throw line frequently by attacking the basket, and made several three pointers. Together, Waller and Farmer could end up as the Rams top two all-time leading scorers by the end of their respective careers.
Alexia Watkins (Clayton guard, 2021)
Clayton guard Alexia Watkins should see her recruitment pick up during her senior season for the Comets. As a junior, she averaged six points, six rebounds, and two steals per game this past season for a Clayton squad that had a really good 2019-20 campaign. With her returning among other key contributors, the Comets will be one of the top contenders for the GNRC title this season.
Janay McDonald (South Johnston guard, 2022)
Rising junior guard Janay McDonald has a great chance at a breakout season for the South Johnston Trojans. She’s plays with a ton of energy on both ends of the floor and was one of the more consistent performers for her team last season. McDonald’s return could help the Trojans improve during the 2020-21 campaign after the team was only able to muster four wins last year.
Khaliyah Peacock (Smithfield Selma guard, 2021)
Another guard duo that could lead their team to the playoffs is one that Smithfield-Selma will have back next season. Rising senior guard Khaliyah Peacock is a knockdown shooter and an efficient scorer overall for the Spartans. She shot 50% from the field and 44% from three point range as a junior leading her team to a 12 win season. Expect her recruitment to pick up over the next several months and her performance could get Smithfield-Selma into the 3-A state playoffs this year.
Kayla Robertson (Smithfield Selma guard, 2023)
Yet another 2023 guard that made a huge impact on her program as a freshman, Spartans guard Kayla Robertson led her team in rebounding and was the second leading scorer as well. She made a lot of plays off the dribble and in transition while also being a tenacious defender. Having both of their starting guards back should make Smithfield-Selma a tough team to beat in 2021.
