The 2020-21 season will have some top blockers returning, and they are looking to cause more damage to those who challenge them. Let’s take a look at some top returning shot blockers.
Anisha Able, Barringer, Jr. – Get out of Able’s way when she is in the zone. The junior had a monster sophomore year for Barringer out of Newark. She finished with 115 blocks in 19 games – good for 6.1 blocks per game. Her numbers last year were just insane. Able had five games where she had at least 10 blocks, including an incredible 14-block performance against Newark Central, where she went for 12 points, 17 rebounds and 14 blocks in a triple-double. She is a dominant scorer, rebounder and shot blocker, and she’ll be just as dangerous in her junior season.
Jamiyah Alston, Piscataway Tech, Jr. – Alston made the most of her 17 games last season, finishing with 85 blocks on the year for an average of 5 blocks a game. Alston was extremely productive in the games she played in as a scorer, rebounder, shot blocker and in steals. She’ll look for much of the same as a junior.
Maddison Vaughn Maddison Vaughn 5'9" | SG Roselle | 2021 State NJ , Roselle, Sr. – Vaughn totaled 112 blocks in 24 games last year – good for 4.7 blocks per game. She had five or more blocks 12 times on the year. Vaughn had 12 blocks against Roselle Catholic a season ago. She will be a player to watch in Union County in her senior season.
Katy Gashler, Westwood, Sr. – Gashler led the state in total blocks last year with 146. She had at least two blocks in all 31 of her games last season. Her best performances came against Glen Rock (11 blocks) and Northern Highlands (10 blocks). Expect a major senior year for Gashler.
Caileigh Walsh, Gill St. Bernard’s, Sr. – Walsh, a Northwestern commit, uses her height to her advantage down low. As a junior, the 6-foot-4 playmaker dominated with 120 blocks in 26 games, good for 4.6 blocks per game. She posted a triple-double in a win over Hunterdon Central last season with 20 points, 12 rebounds and 11 blocks. Walsh is one of the top rim protectors in the state, and she will look to finish out an amazing high school career with a strong senior campaign for the Gill St. Bernard’s Knights.
