Truly possessing the attribute of unselfishness as an athlete is one of the most attractive qualities there is, both on and off the court. Whether you are at the top of all the leaderboards, or coming off the very end of the bench; those who are constantly looking to put their team and camaraderie ahead of their own talents will prevail in the eyes of coaches and teammates. The following young women are two outstanding examples of this exemplary characteristic, as well as many others, in every aspect of the meaning.
Halle Hageman Halle Hageman 5'6" | SG Mountainside | 2022 State OR – Mountainside 2022 – PG
Sitting at #3 on the assists leaderboard last season, Hageman averaged 4.2 per game with a 1.31 assist/ turnover ratio and 122 total assists by the end of her sophomore season. This is a player that stood out in many areas. On the stat sheet alone she also averaged 9 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.7 steals per game and was a team captain for the Mavericks as a sophomore. Alongside the plethora of talent on her squad last season, the fact that she was made a team captain as an underclassman really stood out to me as an indication of her character. Halle is one to really fall into whatever role her team needs in any given game. Whether she needs to be an attacker, shooter, or just the initiator of her teams offense, she rises to the occasion. She is not afraid of the big moments by any means, and has a confidence in her game that is impossible to teach. Last but not least, Hageman crashes the boards on every possession despite being only 5’6”. She is not afraid of making contact with opponents and running into the line of fire- something that many female athletes tend to avoid. Though she still has the second half of her high school career to go, Halle is already performing at an elite level against some of the best players the state has to offer. She has all of the qualities to become a successful collegiate athlete and I am excited to see where the next two years lead her.
Allie Hueckman Allie Hueckman 5'10" | SG Burns | 2021 State OR – Burns 2021 – SG
Allie is a 5’10” senior guard that is signed to continue her basketball career at Eastern Washington University beginning fall 2021. She is truly a diamond in the rough that the Eagles found to add to their program, as she has been a major contributor to Burns since her freshman season. She specializes in the corner three, shooting outside consistently off both the dribble and pass and averaged 17.4 points per game throughout 19-20. Her shot is quick and efficient, and she gets it off successfully over the top of active defenders. She was #17 in assists per game in the state last season, averaging 2.4 per game, along with 6 rebounds, 2.1 steals, and 1.2 blocks. Hueckman brings her best to the table every game, in every category. And that is something to greatly admire. She is nearly unstoppable when she gets down to 1v1 and has a variety of finishes at the hoop that makes her game incredibly versatile to guard around the basket. Defensively, she is an anticipator and is always on the move and jumping passing lanes where you’d least expect it. Hueckman is one of the best overall athletes and most hardworking and underrated players that I have yet to see in the state. She is beyond talented and has every quality necessary to be a standout guard in the Big Sky Conference.
