As with the current senior class, I would like to highlight some of the top juniors in the area that should be on your radar. Leading the way in this group is small forward [player_tooltip player_id="91554" first="Janiah" last="Barker"]. The 6-foot-2 prospect averaged 11.5 points and 7.5 rebounds across 24 games for Tampa Bay Tech last season. Barker can defend her opponents 1-5 and will be a terrific player at the next level for an elite college program. Moving from that, this class has a bunch of prospects looking to emerge.
Let’s take a look...
[player_tooltip player_id="154900" first="Cameron" last="Araujo"] - Southwest (PH 57)
Down in Miami, Araujo put up some monster numbers for the Eagles. The 5-foot-8 shooting guard averaged 17.1 points and 10.3 rebounds last season for Southwest. With her assistance, the Eagles won eight of their final nine games. Araujo also plugs well as a small forward or point guard in certain sets. Against Coral Gables, Araujo scored 31 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. That performance sparked a run of seven games in which she scored at least 17 points and collected seven or more boards. Araujo is also a strong defender having recorded 77 steals on the season. She is a player who could rise up the ranks with another strong season.
[player_tooltip player_id="154842" first="Mia" last="Avin"] - Coral Springs (PH 60)
The Colts have a solid floor leader for the next two seasons with Avin at the helm. The 5-foot-5 point guard averaged 9.2 points across 18 games last season. Avin combined to score 29 points in the 7A-District 12 tournament to help Coral Springs to the championship. Avin should average well into double-figures as a junior.
[player_tooltip player_id="91598" first="Emoriah" last="McHenry"] - Norland (PH 70)
The Vikings are looking to replace three seniors that combined to average about 32 points per game. That trio also helped Norland to a 22-7 record and an appearance in the Class 5A regional final. Looking to step-up in her role will be [player_tooltip player_id="91598" first="Emoriah" last="McHenry"]. The 5-foot-9 guard/forward averaged 5.8 points and 5.3 rebounds last season. In addition, McHenry tallied 13 games with five or more boards. Against Mourning, McHenry scored 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Moreover, nine of those grabs came off the offensive glass. I think learning from her elder understudies will pay dividends for her on the court this winter.
[player_tooltip player_id="91601" first="Angelina" last="Wimbley"] - Park Vista (PH 73)
Up in Lake Worth, Wimbley helped the Cobras to a 19-7 record and an appearance in the district championship. The 5-foot-8 combo guard averaged 11.1 points and 3.2 rebounds per game as a sophomore. Over her final six games, Wimbley combined to score 76 points. Park Vista won five of their six games during that span. On the defensive side, Wimbley recorded a season-high seven steals against Wellington. Will her late season momentum carry over into this season? My bet is it would.
[player_tooltip player_id="91595" first="Samiyah" last="Briggs"] - Calvary Christian (PH 74)
Briggs is your quintessential player to watch at this spot. All the 5-foot-7 shooting guard did was average a team-best 12.1 points per game and lead the Eagles to a 18-6 overall record last season. Against University School, Briggs dropped a season-high 30 points on 10-of-18 from the field. Moreover, Briggs grabbed 12 rebounds against the Sharks. That performance was one of 16 games in which she scored in double-figures. Briggs is the type of player who has matched her play with team performance so far in her career.
