In the end, it was the Eagles who pulled off the upset against a program that’s been to back-to-back NCISAA 2-A final fours. The Eagles took down the Chargers, 62-55 to open conference play. Prep Girls Hoops NC takes a look at the standouts from this contest.
Caroline Fox (Wayne Christian 2022 guard)
Fox was the best player on the floor on either side and continued her excellent start to the 2020-21 season. Whenever Wayne Country Day made a run to close the gap, Fox hit a clutch shot or made a big play for one of her teammates. She’s an excellent floor general who takes care of the basketball and is very unselfish. Expect her to be a big part of this team going forward as they enter the holiday break.
Brianna Verme (Wayne Christian 2022 forward)
Once again, Brianna Verme was a beast on the boards for her squad as she’s been for the Eagles’ first four games of the season. The junior forward had another double-double and several key baskets down the stretch. She might be undersized for her position, but she plays bigger than even the most physically imposing competition. As one of the best players in Wayne County, Verme scores and rebounds at a high rate while also being really good defensively.
Jordan Whitney (Wayne Country Day 2023 forward)
Jordan Whitney was a major standout for Wayne Country Day in their loss to Wayne Christian. The sophomore forward enjoyed a breakout performance for the Chargers hitting most of her shots in the paint. With the Chargers struggling from the outside, it was Whitney who kept them in the game throughout the first three quarters of play. If she can sustain this play, it could be a breakout year for her.
