The North Carolina Public Schools just started games back earlier this month in the Hoop State. The fans were limited estimating 30 or less in the gym today. Some observations here today – All PLAYERS AND REFEREES WEARING MASKS at all times. I had seen this of course during Covid-19 times but it was a first for me with Referees wearing them the whole game. Oh yeah when the game started the whole 1st half was played with just 2 referees before eventually the third one showed up at halftime.
The Laney HS Lady Bucs jumped out on the hometown team from Brunswick County and really never looked back. The Lady Bucs would prevail 54-41 and had balance scoring with Brooke Sommer (2022) leading the way with 14 points while Taylor Chism (2022) added 13 points. Senior guard Jackie Hill chipped in with 9 points.
Sommer a junior guard really came out on fire knocking down shots on the perimeter with her quick release. Sommer shot the ball at a good clip and was confident with her outside shooting.
Chism a multi-sport athlete was just all over the court with her play. Chism picked up several steals and always remained active on the floor. Chism felt most comfortable from the mid-range after converting a few jumpers. Chism plays the game very vocal and was always on move with constant hustle with her great footwork. Chism also excels on the soccer field for the Lady Bucs.
Hill a guard provided some early scoring to start the game. Hill 5’8 was always looking to attack the basket.
The Lady Trojans fell to (0-2) on the season. Gracie Elmore a junior guard was able to pop off some screens for good looks. Elmore works away from the ball and tends to have a quick shot release.
Hailey Woodard didn’t score but a bucket in the game might be a name to monitor down the road for the West Brunswick HS. Woodard a freshman plays really good defense and understands keeping her hands up and defending on the ball. Woodard (2024) a 3 sport athlete is going to be a name you hear in the years to follow down in Brunswick County.
