Several teams had excellent seasons including several teams who significantly improved their season win total and made the playoffs. One team went into the postseason with an undefeated record and took their success to within a game of regionals. What’s in store for this conference in 2020-21? Prep Girls Hoops NC takes a look at this ECC split league.
D.H. Conley
After a special season in 2020, Conley will be looking for an encore this season and they have a good chance to do so. Led by 2023 standout Kylah Silver Kylah Silver 5'8" | CG D.H. Conley | 2023 State NC at point guard, the Vikings were able to reach the fourth round of the 3-A state playoffs last season and finished 29-1. Silver helped lead them to a conference title as well, but with their top scorer graduating, there will be more responsibility for her this year. Expect to hear a lot about 2024 guard Krystal Haddock as well for a team that consistently wins games.
South Central
This South Central team will likely be competing with Conley at the top of the conference this season. The Falcons are another program that wins a lot of contests and puts players on college programs. They’ll be led by three excellent 2022 prospects: guard/forward Kayla Friend Kayla Friend 6'0" | PF South Central | 2022 NC , guard Kayla Smith and wing Alondra Jordan. 2023 guard Amari Palmer is sure to have a breakout season for this team as they look to take back the conference title.
J.H. Rose
The Rose program has improved over the last couple of years reaching the state playoffs this past season. They’ll be led by 2021 guard Ania Sands, who should garner late interest from college coaches, 2022 wing Zakarraih Smith-Crandle, and 2023 guard Aniya Hemby. Expect the Rampants to fight for a top three finish this year in a talented conference.
Southern Wayne
Southern Wayne had one of their best seasons in a long time going 16-11 and finishing second in the regular season standings. The Saints return their entire roster from last year (which was seven players) including 2021 guards Alissa Meadows, Aleesha Boyette and Ty’lisha Maye. They’ll be looking to spoil the party for the Pitt County teams they’ll be going against this year.
Eastern Wayne
Eastern Wayne struggled to a two-win season last year, but they do return two of their top scorers from last year in 2021 guards Jada Kent and Nya Ward. The Warriors are looking to get back to their form of their three previous seasons before 2020.
C.B. Aycock
Aycock reached the state playoffs last season thanks to a great late season push that saw them get into the picture. Three 2021 players will be looking to keep the Golden Falcons competitive once again: forward Katlyn Parrish, guard Kaitlyn Smith, and forward Abbey Thomas. They’ve also got some promising 2023 prospects like Destiny Mason who could contribute right away.
New Bern
New Bern is another improving program that has a lot of talent especially in the frontcourt. Led by 2021 forwards Destiny Banks-Worthington and Keyanna Stewart, the Bears are hoping to fight for one of the top spots in the ECC this season. They’ve also got a promising guard in Kyla Brice Kyla Brice 5'4" | PG New Bern | 2023 NC , a 2023 prospect that played big minutes as a freshman last year.
