We’re wrapping up the regular season and wanted to highlight one of Pinellas County’s top teams, the Lakewood Spartans (current record 15-3).
Lakewood consistently wins their District and up until recently, dominated play within Pinellas County. Last year, Clearwater beat the Spartans in the Pinellas County Athletic Conference (PCAC) Championship game and they have split their two contests already this year. In the upcoming PCAC Championship game (Friday, January, 29 at 7pm @ Clearwater), we expect to see another great battle between these two as their inner-County rivalry continues to grow.

The Spartans only graduated two seniors, so this year, they’ve been able to build on a team that already has significant experience. In fact, they only have two seniors this year as well. 5’8 Shooting Guard Nilah Coleman and 5’9 forward Ta’Nauviyon Williams are both uncommitted players in the class of 2021 and can definitely play at the next level. Coleman can score at all three levels, has a quick first step and is slippery when getting to the rim. Williams is a versatile player who can play the 3 and 4, has great bounce, is a bit time rebounder, and has serious elevation on her jumper!

The majority of the Lakewood roster is filled with Juniors (Class of 2022) led by 5’4 Guard MaKayla Johnson and 5’7 Guard [player_tooltip player_id="91574" first="Reilly" last="Webb"]. Johnson is a quick, lock-down defender with good ball skills. She can hit the open three and finish at the rim. Webb is the glue kid that keeps this team moving in the right direction. She plays 1-4, distributes the ball, hits when open and with her high basketball IQ, is a coach on the floor. Both Johnson and Webb are three year starters for the Spartans.
The rest of the junior class makes this team deep and gives big game experience which will come in handy as the season continues. 5’6 Guard Sincere Robinson can score 20 and you wouldn’t even know it. She’s extremely efficient with her shot, scoring at all three levels. She’s a solid defender that can wreak havoc for opposing guards when she wants to and can be an immediate spark when coming off the bench. 5’9 Guard [player_tooltip player_id="248460" first="Alexis" last="Staton"] is a transfer from American Collegiate, has added a significant three point threat, which was much needed for this team. She’s a streaky shooter and can create a shot for herself whenever she wants to. She’s been a big addition to a team that already had a solid foundation. 5’8 Jonyesha Thomas isn’t the biggest big, but she somehow she gets the job done. She can move bodies underneath, rebound, and finish around the rim. 6’3 Da’Nasia Albritton provides significant length coming off the bench and is a solid paint defender.
2023 5’8 Guard A’shiya Youngblood is a special athlete that was just starting to show dominance when she injured her knee and will miss the rest of the season with a repaired MCL.
With a very strong starting five and a deep bench, the Spartans look to make another run in the postseason. Head Coach Necole Tunsil always has her team ready to play anyone and the team has their sights set on Lakeland in February for a run at a 4A State Championship!
