Continue ReadingThe state playoffs rolled along late last week in Skiatook with four very good teams facing off. In the first game, Muldrow used a furious fourth quarter to get within two by the time the buzzer went off to end the game. In the end, Locust Grove came out 41-39 winners. In the later game, the No. 1 – 4A team in the state, Classen SAS took on Grove in a close battle that nobody saw coming. Grove – who would end up making it through to the state portion of the tourney after all – came up four points short of shocking the Oklahoma girls basketball world. After trailing for three quarters, Classen SAS held Grove to just five points in the fourth quarter and won the game 49-45.
Top Player of the Day
Kennedi Wight | 5-8 CG | Muldrow | 2024
Kennedi (aka Kiki) was the 49th ranked player in the class of 2024. That will change. There isn’t much tape out there, but after seeing Muldrow in person, it is clear that Wight is an outstanding high school player. Still very young, she is the clear cut leader of her Muldrow squad and will no doubt have her team right back in this position next season. Kiki showed tremendous handles and an outstanding shooting touch. She is tall and long and has a very high release on her shot making it virtually unblockable. She uses her handles and size to fight to the rim and does a great job of finishing in traffic. Against a very good Locust Grove squad, Wight put up 22 points. She had two three pointers and was 8-for-8 from the charity stripe. She is going to be a lot of fun to watch over the next few years!
Other Top Players
Rory Geer | 5-11 SG | Grove | 2021 | @roryygeer
The UCO commit has outstanding size and is an absolute scoring machine. She was a very big reason that her team pushed one of the best squads in the state to the absolute brink. She is not only tall, but very strong and did a really good job holding her own against possibly the best player in the state in Darianna Littlepage-Buggs Darianna Littlepage-Buggs 6'1" | SF Classen SAS | 2022 State #24 Nation OK . Her defense was disruptive to the high-powered offense of Classen SAS. Rory scored seven from the free throw line. She also added a two point field goal and two very timely three pointers. Geer is going to be a very important part of what the young Bronchos squad will be doing next season.
Micah Gray Micah Gray 5'8" | CG Classen SAS | 2022 State OK | 5-9 G | Classen SAS | 2022 | @MicahGray2022
I have seen Micah play several times now and I can definitely say that she is a player I can always count on to be better than the last time I saw her. I believe that in the time I have been watching Classen SAS, Gray has vaulted from a D-II or D-III prospect to a definite D-I player. She is big, very sturdy and strong. She uses her size and quickness to get to the hoop with or without the ball. She is a force in the lane, despite being “just” 5-9. She is a true three-level scorer who has a nice mid-range jumper and a beautiful outside shot. She is an absolute beast when it comes to scoring. She moves very well and shows a knack for hitting the big bucket as needed. If Gray isn’t on your list, you need to be watching her with the deadly OKC Mavs Elite squad. She stands out on any team, even an all-star squad like they have.
Kaitlynn Spradlin | 5-7 G | Locust Grove | 2021
Honestly, there isn’t much out there about Kaitlynn, so unless you have seen Locust Grove play in person, you may not know her. I guessed at her height relative to the other players on the court (coaches: put the kids’ heights on your roster, please). That being said, I couldn’t not write about her. She was EVERYWHERE! She is a smart defender with quick hands. She racks up the steals by reading the play and jumping the pass. She finishes well in transition with defenders chasing her down and the threat of being hit hard at the rim. She is a vicious competitor – a fighter who clearly “wants it.” There isn’t much she doesn’t do and I can’t imagine that she isn’t going somewhere to play collegiality, though I don’t honestly know. She scored 22 points in the game against Muldrow, more than half of her team’s total. This senior is a star and if you have a spot left to fill, you need to look her up.
Kolby Boyett | 6-2 C | Grove | 2022
It can be infuriating as a scout – and presumably as a coach – to see a player with tremendous size who just cannot figure out how to put the ball in the basket while standing under the rim. That is not the case with Boyett. She has it figured out in a big way. She was the main reason for Grove leading at the half over the best team in the state. I’m not sure that she missed anything in the first half. I also never saw her miss a free throw in the game. She uses great up fakes and twists and turns in the post to get her defender (or defenders) off balance, allowing her time to finish. She is very good at getting position and has the hands to catch every pass into her. She is also a defensive presence and a shot changer on the other end. With Classen SAS’s Madi Roberts out, Boyett had her way. Watching the two of them go at it with their very similar styles would have been a lot of fun. Alas, Boyett was on her own and free to do as much damage as she wanted. She finished with 16 of Grove’s total 45 points with seven field goals.
