Florida Roundup: News Around Florida Volume 12 By Michael Wholey 4/26/21 9:00 AM EST The High School Season has concluded and travel ball season is in full effect. Let’s take a look around Florida on what has been going on in the last couple weeks. 2023 [player_tooltip player_id="91651" first="Taliah" last="Scott"] (Oakleaf HS / FGB) has received an official invite to USA Basketball U16 Trials. These invites are very exclusive and only sent out to select athletes nationally. Scott is widely considered one of the top 25 prospects in the 2023 class and this is a well deserving article. She will travel to Colorado Springs with other athletes across the US to compete for a spot on the 10-12 man U16 roster for USA Basketball. 2022 [player_tooltip player_id="91559" first="Jordana" last="Codio"] (Montverde Academy) has verbally committed to the University of Texas. It has been quite an eventful few weeks for Codio as just 3 weeks ago she announced she was transferring from American Heritage (Delray) to Montverde Academy. She then later announced her de-commitment from University of Wisconsin after Wisconsin Head Coach Jonathan Tsipis was fired. The decision to commit to Texas, pairs Codio with Head Coach Vic Schaefer, who just recently completed his first season with the Longhorns after a successful stint as the Head Coach of Mississippi State. Schaefer is widely known as a defensive guru and will likely utilize Codio’s length, athleticism, wing span and versatility in a variety of ways in his defensive schemes. Additional Signing/Commitment News 2021 [player_tooltip player_id="220020" first="Shadaria" last="Smith"] (Wekiva) has signed with Eastern Florida. The 5’6 dynamic guard just completed her Senior season at Wekiva, helping lead them to a 24-4 record and an appearance in the state title game. She was the teams 2nd leading scorer at 12.5 points per game to go along with 3.8 RPG, 2.7 APG, and 2.6 SPG. 2021 [player_tooltip player_id="91513" first="Erica" last="Turral"] (FAMU HS) has signed with Webber International University. The 5’2 guard was Florida A&M’s 3rd leading scorer averaging 8.2 points per game to go along with 3.5 steals per game. She is the twin sister of [player_tooltip player_id="91513" first="Erica" last="Turral"] that is headed to Stony Brook after leading the state of Florida in scoring with 28.8 points per game. Erica is an efficient scorer who played well off of her sister Erica and 2022 Ameari Logan all season. 2021 [player_tooltip player_id="219964" first="Stephanie" last="Theodossakos"] (St. Andrews HS) is headed to the University of Tampa next season! The 5’10 wing was the team’s leading scorer and rebounder this season averaging 13.8 points per game to go along with 6.6 rebounds per game. Theodossakos previously attended Boca Raton Community HS before transferring to St. Andrews. Theodossakos St. Andrews teammate 2021 [player_tooltip player_id="220029" first="Sophia" last="Federico"] (St. Andrews HS) has made the decision to attend Rhodes College in Memphis, TN. Federico transferred to St Andrews after attending North Broward Prep previously. Federico season was shortened due to injury playing just 5 of her teams 14 games averaging 5.0 points per game. SIGNING DAY AT JONES Jones High School in Orlando hosted a signing day this week, announcing the future colleges of five of its Varsity Girls Basketball players. Teammates 2021 6’1 Forward [player_tooltip player_id="249378" first="Chardae" last="Greene"] (Jones HS) and 5’7 Guard Takiyah Altson (Jones HS) have committed to Allen University. Greene was Jones leading scorer averaging 12.1 points per game and was the team’s 2nd leading rebounder with 9.3 rebounds per game, falling just short of averaging a double double. Alston was the team’s defensive specialist, getting after opposing teams point guards applying ball pressure and running through passing lanes. She lead the team with 8.2 steals per game to go along with 8.1 points per game. 2021 5’9 Wing Cosianna Williams (Jones HS) and 5’5 Guard [player_tooltip player_id="249372" first="Charnee" last="Greene"] (Jones HS) will also attend college together, as both have committed to Riverland College. Williams did a little of everything for Jones averaging 4.2 points to go along with 4.6 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game while Greene appeared in 12 of the teams 21 games averaging 1.1 points per game. 2021 5’5 Guard Wanda Maldonado (Jones HS) was the team’s final signee and has committed to attend Garrett College. Maldonado appeared in 13 of the teams 21 games and averaged 1.3 points per game. COACHING NEWS Long time Dunbar Girls Varsity Head Coach Dwayne Donnell has made the move and is now the new Head Coach at Evangelical Christian School. Donnell has been a staple in Southwest Florida and is one of the longest tenured head coaches in the state. He has built Dunbar into a perennial powerhouse and also run the Queen of Palms tournament around the December holidays for years. Look for him to bring his extensive resume and success at building programs from the ground up to ECS. Jalen Outten, Director of Florida Future and former Assistant Coach at Lehigh is now the Head Coach at Lehigh. Outten father is a long time Fort Myers Assistant Coach and former Director of the Florida Future. Jalen has been reviving the program and will look to bring his familiarity with the Southwest Florida area and his connections to build Lehigh into a contender. Outten previously served as a Graduate Assistant for Auburn from 2016-2018 and has two sisters that both play at Furman University [player_tooltip player_id="91524" first="Janay" last="Outten"] and Jarya Outten. We will look to continue to cover news all across the state. Our audience supplies us with some of our best information. Keep us updated on Florida news be emailing me at WholeyPrepHoops@gmail.com or DM’ing me through Twitter or Instagram @WholeyPrepHoops.
