This past high school season was unlike any other. It appears there is light at the end of the tunnel with everyday life starting to return to normal. Therefore, hoop events across our network should be in full swing.
I would like to go back and highlight some freshman players who you should be on the lookout for. These names should be making impacts this spring and summer across the state.
[player_tooltip player_id="243887" first="Selma" last="Drucker"] - American Heritage (Delray) (PH. 70)
The future appears to be bright up in Delray with Drucker in the mix. The 5-foot-10 power forward averaged 4.3 points and seven rebounds per game for the Stallions last season. Drucker’s work on the glass was second on the team to [player_tooltip player_id="151282" first="Alancia" last="Ramsey"]. Against Western, she pulled down 12 boards (eight offensive) and added six points. Moreover, Drucker tallied nine games with seven or more rebounds. Her size and positioning in the frontcourt is very good and should only improve. Drucker should also become more of a factor on the offensive end as a sophomore.
[player_tooltip player_id="243882" first="Jocelyn" last="Gagnon"] - Calvary Christian Academy (PH. 26)
Calvary Christian went 14-8 overall last season without a senior contributor. Furthermore, the Eagles got a significant boost from freshman and eight graders. One of those players was [player_tooltip player_id="243882" first="Jocelyn" last="Gagnon"]. The 5-foot-10 shooting guard/small forward averaged 6.6 points and three rebounds across 22 games. Moreover, Gagnon scored in double-figures in six games. Against Highlands Christian, she scored 16 points on a season-high 88 percent shooting from the floor. Gagnon has shown potential to be a good shooter, but just needs to be more consistent. Her 68 3-point attempts appears to show she has confidence in her ability. Furthermore, Gagnon recorded five games with two or more 3-pointers. It also doesn’t hurt that CCA returns its entire unit around her.
[player_tooltip player_id="221841" first="Shania" last="Swan"] - Miami Norland (PH. 19)
Games should be entertaining for years to come on both sides in Miami Gardens. Norland also features 2024 Marcus Allen in the same class. Swan is a 5-foot-7 guard with athletic upside. She averaged just over 10 points and nearly three rebounds over twelve games. Swan also went 29-of 89 (33 percent) from deep. Her potential as a shooter is something she can work on into next season. However, Swan did score in double-figures in seven games. She is also teammates with a very good frontcourt player in 2024 Ka’Zariah Johnson. The pair could be one of the better tandems in Miami-Dade County.
[player_tooltip player_id="244132" first="Izabella" last="Molina"] - Doral Academy (PH. 74)
Molina could turn out to be one of the more underrated players in this class. The 6-foot-3 center averaged 6.8 points and 9.7 rebounds last season for the Firebirds. Overall, Molina grabbed 224 boards (96 offensive). In addition, she recorded ten or more rebounds in a dozen games. Opponents were clearly limited in possessions with her in the paint. There is simply very few prospects or programs with her size and length around. Molina’s 43 percent field goal percentage is something for her to work on. She could be a dominant player with her improved shooting efficiency.
