Who are the best girls basketball prospects in the city of Miami?
Believe it or not, I think the "Magic City" gets a bit overlooked compared to the talent in neighboring Broward County. We know how good the prospects at Plantation American Heritage and Blanche Ely are, to name a few.
Keep in mind this is my opinion and might not reflect our consensus rankings.
Let’s take a look...
1 - [player_tooltip player_id="217667" first="Kayla" last="Nelms"] - Miami Country Day
I am going to take 2024 [player_tooltip player_id="217667" first="Kayla" last="Nelms"] No.1 overall for a few reasons. I like the fact she has size as a 6-foot-1 forward with evolving post moves. Moreover, she has three more years to fine tune her game. Nelms can also extend out and knock down perimeter baskets. She shot 49 percent from the field and 46 percent from beyond the arc. Overall, Nelms averaged 11.4 points and 7.2 rebounds per game last season. Playing on a really good team like Miami Country Day also gives Nelms a great opportunity to get better each and every day. I think her potential is very high.
2 - [player_tooltip player_id="219927" first="Ka’Zariah" last="Johnson"] - Miami Norland
Again, I am taking the height and the size here with 2024 Ka’Zahria Johnson. The 6-foot-2 forward averaged 8.3 points and 9.6 rebounds per game while shooting 47 percent from the floor. In addition, Johnson rejected 24 shots in 12 contests. Opponents were likely limited to one possession with her in the paint. Johnson collected 115 rebounds and had ten or more in seven games. Her trajectory should have her averaging a double-double next season.
3) [player_tooltip player_id="91640" first="Emily" last="Montes"] - Palmer Trinity
What I like about 2023 [player_tooltip player_id="91640" first="Emily" last="Montes"] is her size (5’10’) and length coming out of the backcourt. Opponents will have a tough time defending her with her shooting reach. In addition, she is quick and is a strong ball handler. Montes averaged 15.8 points, 5.8 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 1.4 blocks per game last season. Moreover, she scored in double-figures in all 19 games played. Therefore, you could basically count on her every game. Her ability to create a multitude of plays is extremely valuable.
4) [player_tooltip player_id="243924" first="Rhema" last="Collins"] - Schoolhouse Prep
2023 [player_tooltip player_id="243924" first="Rhema" last="Collins"] is my next pick after a good season with the Wolfpack. The 6-foot-2 small forward averaged 14 points and 5.1 rebounds over seven recorded games last season. Against Miami Christian (17-7), she posted a season-high 23 points. She also added a double-double against Cardinal Newman with 15 points and 12 rebounds. I think she is headed for a big junior season.
5) [player_tooltip player_id="91642" first="Kristina" last="Godfrey"] - Miami Country Day
2023 [player_tooltip player_id="91642" first="Kristina" last="Godfrey"] put up good numbers for the Spartans last season. The 5-foot-9 guard averaged 10.7 points, 6.6 assists, 3.1 steals and 2.6 rebounds per game while shooting 51 percent from the floor. Godfrey also went a respectable 21-of-67 (31 percent) from beyond the arc. Playing with a great group of teammates really elevates her as well.
Bonus Pick: [player_tooltip player_id="154908" first="Enjulina" last="Gonzalez"] - Miami Christian
Gonzalez should have the keys to the Victors’ offense with the graduation of 2021 [player_tooltip player_id="91546" first="Gabriela" last="Bendeck"]. The 5-foot-9 guard finished second on the team in points (12.9) while tying for the lead in rebounds (6.0). Gonzalez is a really stronger defender that helped Miami Christian to a 17-7 record. She recorded three or more steals in ten games. Gonzalez played fairly well in two games against Blanche Ely. One of those contests included 20 points and five rebounds while shooting 50 percent from the field. Should be more than motivated to keep Miami Christian on its winning ways next season.
