Let’s take a closer look at the top five point guards in the Class of 2023 coming into the ’21-’22 season.
#5|2023 5’6 PG [player_tooltip player_id="293245" first="Riley" last="Nelson"] – Middletown – Fairfax Stars
There’s no question that [player_tooltip player_id="293245" first="Riley" last="Nelson"] is one of the top overall point guards in the 2023 class. She can do it all with the ball in her hands, and even without the ball, on defense, she thrives. Her outside shooting has steadily improved every offseason, so if defenses want to stop Middletown they must defend the outside shot. Riley can finish around the basket with both hands, but her preferred role is as a facilitator for her teammates who racks up lots of assists. [player_tooltip player_id="293245" first="Riley" last="Nelson"] is a D1 caliber player with a bright future.
#4|2023 5’6 PG [player_tooltip player_id="293230" first="Makayla" last="Jackson"] – Bullis – Fairfax Stars
[player_tooltip player_id="293230" first="Makayla" last="Jackson"] is for sure going to have a breakout season because of how efficiently aggressive she is as a point guard. She has no problem taking the ball to the basket herself or pulling up off the dribble for a mid-range jump shot. Her three point shot is arguably the best on this list, but Makayla is not limited by her offensive prowess. On defense, Makayla is equally as aggressive, and she steals the ball a lot which often leads to transition points. Every scout in the DMV should have [player_tooltip player_id="293230" first="Makayla" last="Jackson"]’s name written down because she’s going to do big things at both the high school and college levels.

#3|2023 5’4 PG [player_tooltip player_id="142842" first="Grace" last="McMahon"] – St. James
[player_tooltip player_id="142842" first="Grace" last="McMahon"] is everything a coach is looking for in a point guard and that’s because of her leadership on and off the court. She always keeps her teammates’ energy high and she truly leads with her play. She’s a lights out shooter who can score with both hands around the basket, and there’s no stopping her at the free throw line. McMahon is a more than solid defender who gets a lot of blocks for her size because of her aggressiveness. It’s clear that [player_tooltip player_id="142842" first="Grace" last="McMahon"] will be a phenomenal leader for St. James the next two seasons as well as at the next level very soon.

#2|2023 5’4 PG [player_tooltip player_id="163910" first="Kameryn" last="Dorsey"] – St. Frances Academy – Team Thrill
[player_tooltip player_id="163910" first="Kameryn" last="Dorsey"] and her sister Daimoni are about to be the most talked about tandem in all of DMV sports this upcoming basketball season. At point guard, [player_tooltip player_id="163910" first="Kameryn" last="Dorsey"] can truly finish around or over any defender, and her shot is equally as consistent as her finishing around the basket. Her passing is already college level ready, and there’s clearly a special connection on the court between her and her sister which helps them dominate their competition. St. Frances Academy is by all means must watch television this Winter, and the reason is because of Kameryn and [player_tooltip player_id="137242" first="Daimoni" last="Dorsey"].

#1|2023 5’4 PG [player_tooltip player_id="142838" first="Channing" last="Williams"] – New Hope Academy – DC Premier
If you’re looking for elite level ball handling skill and incredible overall efficiency in a point guard then look no further than [player_tooltip player_id="142838" first="Channing" last="Williams"]. New Hope Academy has their sights set on a run at GEICO Nationals this season, and it just might be possible with [player_tooltip player_id="142838" first="Channing" last="Williams"] at point guard. Williams truly does it all on both ends of the court, and it’s shocking to think that she is only a Junior with two more basketball seasons to play. She is by all means ready for the college game, but there’s no question that these next two seasons will help her to develop and improve immensely. New Hope Academy is a force to be reckoned with coming into the ’21-’22 season with [player_tooltip player_id="142838" first="Channing" last="Williams"] leading the charge for the Lady Tigers.
