Lomega proved twice last season that they were the better team as they defeated Kiowa again – albeit in a lot closer game – and took home their second championship in a row. Lomega was a powerhouse all season and the championship game margin of victory, seven points, was actually the smallest of the year for one of the most dominant squads that any class of Oklahoma basketball has seen in a long while. The Raiders finished the season with a perfect record and a record 14 state championships as a school. Head coach Kevin Lewallen won his seventh.
2021 Runner-Up Outlook: Kiowa Cowgirls (2020-21 Record: 15-5)
Kiowa had a bit of a miracle run in the state tourney including a buzzer-beater in the semifinal, but that does not mean that they were not a talented team. What they were, perhaps unfortunately, was a team loaded with senior experience. Senior Kye Stone – who has gone on to play college softball – averaged 20 points a game and almost double-digit rebounds, as well. Fellow senior Audrey Johnston had a double-double in the state title game and will be missed on the inside as well.
As for the outlook for the Cowgirls, junior Ella Stone started for the Silver Ball winners and hit some big shots all season long, including the playoffs. She will now be looked upon to lead the team from her guard position. There are no ranked players as of yet on the Kiowa roster, but I look forward to seeing them play down the road and I hope that we can get some players ranked very soon!
2021 Champion Outlook: Lomega Raiders (2020-21 Record: 27-0)
It has got to be a scary proposition for Class B basketball to see that Lomega only had two seniors starting last season. Yes, they were the two leading scorers, but the other three starters were not far behind. Senior Ady Wilson will be playing for SWOSU this coming season. She averaged 16 ppg for the Raiders last season and was a part of three different title teams while in high school (she spent her freshman season with Hammon); Emma Duffy, 5’11” senior forward, averaged 15, also.
Darcy Roberts and Sydni Walker will both be juniors this season and both averaged 11 points last season. They are good-sized guards for not only a Class B school, but any high school honestly. At 5’9″ and 5’10” respectively, the duo score in bunches and present a plethora of problems with their ability to play any position on the floor at a high level. Lomega is a match-up nightmare for any Class B team. Rising senior Henley Eaton will run the show for the Raiders and I don’t really expect there to be much drop-off from last year’s squad. I fully expect the Raiders to be right back at the top of the heap in Class B Oklahoma basketball.
