Throughout this month (and next), I will be highlighting selected teams across South Florida. Today, my focus is on Miami Christian. The Victors went 17-7 and won the Class 2A state championship under head coach Chanel Davila. [player_tooltip player_id="91546" first="Gabriela" last="Bendeck"] (15.1 ppg) is a key departure. The 5-foot-4 guard also averaged six rebounds, 3.7 assists and 2.4 steals per game. In addition, [player_tooltip player_id="244207" first="Ambar" last="Ramirez"] (7.2 ppg) is another loss. Furthermore, [player_tooltip player_id="244206" first="Daimelys" last="Morera"] (9.8 ppg) transferred to Miami High.
2022 [player_tooltip player_id="154908" first="Enjulina" last="Gonzalez"] averaged 12.9 points, six rebounds, 2.5 steals and 2.3 assists per game while shooting a team-best 47 percent from the field. The 5-foot-9 guard is long and an excellent rebounder at her position. Gonzalez plays well off the dribble using her length. On defense, she has active hands and plays tough on-ball defense. Gonzalez is one of the better players in Miami-Dade County. She is verbally committed to Mercer.
2024 [player_tooltip player_id="221843" first="Samantha" last="Vales"] averaged just over six points and 1.4 steals per game. The 5-foot-3 guard should have plenty of experience after playing in 22 contests. Vales will need to be more productive as a sophomore.
2024 [player_tooltip player_id="244205" first="Ziul" last="Gonzalez"] averaged just over three points and two rebounds per game. 2026 Hailey Clements averaged just under four points and played in eleven games. Those are two young players that got a bit of playing time on a high level team. 2022 Victoria Aranguren is one of the Victors’ veterans and has some scoring ability.
Other players include 2022 Elizaenirys Allende, 2023 Madison Betancourt, and 2024 Amira Marquez. This is a roster with talent behind Gonzalez. Miami Christian just needs to put it together.
The loss of Bendeck won't be easy to replace. The departed senior did so much on the floor and was a team leader. Gonzalez is sure to have more responsibility to keep Miami Christian in the same position as it was last season.
