Throughout this month (and next), I will be highlighting selected teams across South Florida. Today, my focus is on Northeast High School.
The Hurricanes finished an even 8-8 last season under head coach Brittney Scott. Scott has since moved on to take an assistant coaching job at FAMU. 2021 [player_tooltip player_id="248735" first="Shade" last="Richardson"] is a key graduate. 2023 [player_tooltip player_id="219936" first="Mariah" last="McKenzie"] (15.1 ppg) is no longer with the team.
The team is now led by Lawrence Hanna.
Top players:
2022 [player_tooltip player_id="154840" first="Etaria" last="Gibbons"] - 6’2 forward
2022 [player_tooltip player_id="219944" first="Veronica" last="Maden"] - 5’6 guard
2022 [player_tooltip player_id="248708" first="Bryah" last="Henry"] - 5’8 guard/forward
2022 [player_tooltip player_id="243994" first="Dianey" last="Ferrier"] - 5’8 guard
Gibbons is a talented player that has been injured in recent years. The 6-foot-2 forward has a ton of potential when healthy. On defense, she can rebound and block shots at a high rate. Her length and athleticism gives her a huge advantage in these areas. Gibbons’ offensive game is where she continues to grow. She’s an all-county player and D1 prospect when 100%. Gibbons might be flying under the radar because of her recent inactivity.
[player_tooltip player_id="219944" first="Veronica" last="Maden"] averaged 7.9 points,5.1 rebounds and 2.2 steals per game while shooting 33 percent from the field. Look for the 5-foot-6 guard to improve her shooting number as a senior. Maden is a good rebounder plays strong defense. I think she's a big key with the losses I mentioned to last seasons team.
[player_tooltip player_id="248708" first="Bryah" last="Henry"] is the top returning rebounder (6.1 rpg). The 5-foot-8 guard/forward also blocked over a shot per contest. Therefore, Henry has some defensive upside. Averaging 3.3 points per game, I’d like to see a bit more on the offensive end. I think that could really help this team if Henry scores a few more points at a efficient rate.
[player_tooltip player_id="243994" first="Dianey" last="Ferrier"] averaged 3.8 points and 4.8 rebounds per game while shooting 33 percent from the field. As with Henry, Ferrier has a chance to step up with better shooting efficiency.
The Hurricanes have a senior class that can win ball games. While each have areas they could work on, I think they have plenty of talent to convert it into a successful season. The return of Gibbons and reloaded offensive production is where I would watch.
