The Good Counsel Super Scrimmage has been a nice preseason measuring stick for years allowing multiple teams to scrimmage different opponents in a round robin half game format. Coaches get to work on different things, tweak line-ups and defenses and for many get a first look at their team as most tryouts ended earlier this week. About 40 or so college coaches were on hand to get a glimpse of the talent as well. In a tribute to the late James Nichols I will mention that the hospitality room was a continental bagels and cream cheese. With that out of the way, here are some of the early day standouts and teams that impressed.
Standouts:
Jalyn Brown Jalyn Brown 6'0" | SF New Hope Academy | 2022 State MD – 6’2″ – Wing – New Hope Academy – 2022
New Hope was the most season ready team in the early morning session and which makes perfect since as the team heads to Puerto Rico this afternoon for their first tournament. Jayln the Louisville commit used her length and athleticism to weave around defenders to finish at the basket. She was very good on the offensive boards elevating over defenders for second chance points.
Kirah Dandridge – 5’ 9″ – Wing – New Hope Academy – 2022
Kirah was very disruptive on the defensive end getting in the passing lanes for steals and stops on the ball. She showed an excellent shooting touch knocking down buckets for the three and mid range.
Delaney Thomas Delaney Thomas 6'2" | C St. John's College | 2023 State MD – 6’3″ – Post – St. John’s College – 2023
St. John’s had things clicking letting loose Delaney Thomas Delaney Thomas 6'2" | C St. John's College | 2023 State MD . She did pretty much everything on the floor and was the most impressive player I saw all morning. She knocked down three pointers, defended the perimeter, transitioned with the ball in the open floor and of course blocked shots sending multiple balls into the stands. Delaney is looking clearly like the top post player in the WCAC and on track to be top in the state and a premier post in the nation, even though she is way more than a post player.
Kyndal Walker Kyndal Walker 5'9" | PG St. John's College | 2024 State MD – 5’9″ – Combo Guard – St. John’s College – 2024
Kyndal has a great first step that must be respected which gives her space to unleash her form perfect shot. Her mid range pull up jumper is a thing of beauty and she is a very good finisher. She plays well on both ends of the floor and should be a major piece as the Cadets look to challenge for the WCAC title.
Marshea Fisher – 5’6″ – Point Guard – Holy Cross – 2025
Marshea impressed with her defense and her ability to turn it into offense. She is good at anticipating the pass and jumping the lane in to a transition basket. She has good form on her shot and is a good finisher. Holy Cross looks to be a piece or two away from being a contender in the WCAC and the freshman is a good start in building something special.
