I still got to see some very good teams and had a lot of fun chatting with coaches, players, and parents. The more of these scrimmages that I go to, the more and more excited I am for the season to tip off.
I should also add that I was told by several coaches – and players – that not all of the starters got minutes during these games and that a lot of JV and even 7th and 8th grade players got time on the floor. So, I may be writing about players who aren’t really going to be out there much this season, but either way, I wouldn’t be writing about them if they weren’t worth writing about.
Unlike last week, I won’t be doing game reports mainly because trying to find rosters for teams where coaches didn’t send me rosters has proven to be too much of a chore. If a coach sends me a roster and I saw their team play, I’m writing about them.
Bailey Layman Bailey Layman 5'6" | PG Cleveland | 2022 State OK | 5-7 PG | 2022 | @bailey_layman
Layman is a very, very good guard with tremendous handles. Our No. 59-ranked player stands out immediately because she is involved in every single play for her very good Cleveland squad on both ends of the floor. On offense she is a floor general who sees the floor very well and never gets rattled, running the offense with precision. On the defensive end, she is a disruptor who puts constant pressure on the opposing guard and forces a lot of mistakes with her high basketball IQ and quick hands to force a lot of turnovers. Bailey currently has several offers in both softball and basketball and will no doubt be playing somewhere in college. If you’re a head coach in need of a hard-nosed point guard who can run your offense with precision, you need to get to Cleveland (Oklahoma) this season and take a look at Bailey Layman Bailey Layman 5'6" | PG Cleveland | 2022 State OK .
Hattie Frazier | 5-8 SF | 2023 | Hudl
I don’t have an official size on Hattie, but 5’8″ seems about right. She is tall, long, and strong and looks like she can probably play the three or four. She can shoot it from long range and has a pretty high basketball IQ – like much of this well-coached Cleveland team does. She is a tough defender and does a good job of closing the distance between her and her opponent and alters a lot of shots. She is a well-rounded player and definitely one to keep an eye on these next couple of seasons.
Tristan Fields | 5-7 CG | 2022 | @tristanfieldsss
I have seen Fields in past seasons get hot and absolutely shoot the lights out. She is a fiery player and the team seems to feed off of her competitiveness. She is a leader and in her senior season, I fully expect big things from her. She leads with her defense, forces a lot of steals, and does a great job of getting out in transition following the other team’s turnover. Tristan is a great spot-up shooter and does a great job of creating scoring opportunities as well as knowing when to make the “extra pass” to a teammate with a better opportunity. Her Twitter hasn’t been updated in a while, but I wouldn’t be at all surprised to learn that she has D-II, D-III or NAIA offers already. I think she could definitely play at the next level if she so desires.
