Fall league is an early opportunity for teams to build some chemistry and integrate new players into their programs. Providence School of Jacksonville put on their annual fall league and around 20 local teams participated this year. Northeast Florida is loaded with talent and the guard position has the deepest pool of that talent. Let’s take a look at some guards that stood out this fall.
Morgan Gavazzi Morgan Gavazzi 5'6" | PG Ponte Vedra | 2024 State FL – Ponte Vedra | ’24
Morgan is back at Ponte Vedra and didn’t miss a beat. With increased minutes during fall league play, she was able to show off her great decision-making. As a point guard, she has great balance in setting up her teammates and knowing when to look for her own shot. Morgan is a knockdown 3-point shooter so opposing defenses will not be able to sag off of her. Her sophomore campaign looks to be really promising.
Eris Lester Eris Lester 5'10" | SF Montverde Academy | 2024 State FL – Orange Park | ’24
Eris picked up right where she left off last season as one of the leading scorers from this area. She is an elite scorer at all three levels. Her athleticism helps her to be able to get her shot off against tough defense. Her handle on the ball allows her to be able to take her defender off the dribble to finish with a lay-up or pull up for a mid-range jump shot. Her long arms allow her to get in passing lanes to create deflections on defense which leads to easy baskets on the other end.
Maddie Millar Maddie Millar 5'9" | CG Bishop Kenny | 2022 State FL – Bishop Kenny | ’22
Maddie was in mid-season form already draining threes with ease. She is probably the best shooter in Northeast Florida, male or female. Maddie is not just a 3-point shooter though as teams usually try and chase her off the 3-point line. She has shown the ability to pull up for a mid-range shot and drive all the way in to finish at the rim. She has a lot more pressure now as the undeniable leader of the team with the departure of Jasmyne Roberts, who now plays for the University of Miami. With improved ball-handling skills and solid teammates around her will make it even tougher to guard her.
Ella Ortman Ella Ortman 5'7" | CG Providence Of Jacksonville | 2023 State FL – Providence | ’23
Ella showed off her skills as both a point guard and shooting guard. Her ability to play on or off the ball will serve her team well this season. She is surrounded by shooters and her team is very disciplined and always looks for the best shot available that is usually facilitated by her. Ella is also a tough defender. What she lacks in size, she makes up for in heart.
Kaylah Turner Kaylah Turner 5'5" | PG Oakleaf | 2023 State FL – Oakleaf | ’23
Kaylah has already embraced her increased role this season and continues to add to her game. She unleashed a deadly mid-range jumper to go along with her slashing ability and consistent 3-point shot. She is one-half of a dynamic duo alongside Fantasia James Fantasia James 5'10" | SF Oakleaf | 2023 State FL , who didn’t play this fall but will make it tough to guard Oakleaf all season long. Even with all that offense, she is still known as a defensive player because she wreaks havoc on the opposing team’s point guard. Kaylah guards end to end, applying constant pressure and disrupting the opposing team’s offensive flow.
