This year’s festivities once again welcomed teams from throughout the state for two days of exciting basketball. Among those that were in attendance – members of the South Carolina Gamecocks women’s basketball team.
Prep Girls Hoops made the trek out to the Columbia area for Friday’s portion of the event. Here is a look at which players from the 2023 class brought their A-games with them.
Maliyiah Mason Maliyiah Mason 6'0" | SF Gray Collegiate | 2023 State SC – Gray Collegiate – For some Palmetto State basketball aficionados, especially those in the Midlands, seeing Mason in black and gray instead of the black and gold of Irmo (where she played previously) will take some getting used to. Mason let everyone know how confident a player she is by calling for the ball. As is expected, she took her fair share of opportunities from behind the arc and put in plenty of hustle plays in attempts for the War Eagles to maintain possession. Mason will dribble the ball near the rim even against a number of defenders and will battle for rebounds. She also has no problems getting fouled and going to the free throw line. She had 11 points in Gray Collegiate’s game with Westside.
Alyssa Woodlock Alyssa Woodlock 5'10" | SF Gray Collegiate | 2023 State SC – Gray Collegiate – The War Eagles were landing transfers from seemingly everywhere – including outside the Midlands. Woodlock is arriving to Gray Collegiate from Eastside HS (Greenville) in the Upstate and War Eagles aficionados will see she has the game on lock. She is effective in the midrange game but will attack the basket as well. Woodlock will absorb contact and head to the free throw line and she has proven she can make her shots at the line or from 3-point range. Woodlock concluded the War Eagles’ matchup with the Rams having scored 10 points and also managed to stay out of foul trouble with only two personals called against her for the game.
Nadia Burns Nadia Burns 5'10" | SF Legion Collegiate | 2023 State SC – Legion Collegiate – It has been Burns’ turn to shine for a while now which is why it is to be expected that when she steps on the court, a team on the other bench is sure to encounter problems. Burns consistently goes strong to the rim and will sink her free throws if she is fouled. She will also win plenty of rebounding battles. Head coach Kevin King’s Lancers faced off against A.C. Flora on Friday’s slate of the She Got Next Tournament with Legion Collegiate dispatching the Falcons by a final score of 50-38. Burns, fittingly, concluded the game with 12 points in the 12-point victory.
Zaria Bell Zaria Bell 6'3" | C South Pointe | 2023 State SC – South Pointe HS – Bell came off the bench for the Stallions in their game with Denmark-Olar – one where the Stallions bested the Vikings by a final of 54-32. She had a few occasions where she drew contact in the low post and got to the free throw line. It may be a small detail in a game that ended up with a lopsided result, but coaches will take those foul shots in closer games. That low post presence she provides attracts plenty of attention along with how physical she can be near the rim. Bell concluded the game with four points.
Dy’Neka Roberts Dy’Neka Roberts 5'8" | SF Denmark-Olar | 2023 State SC – Denmark-Olar HS – Roberts’ playmaking abilities were a key reason why the Vikings managed to get back in its game with South Pointe despite falling behind early by 15 points. With over 11 minutes in the first half, her two-point field goal proved to be the first Vikings points of the game – and it was one that they began to match South Pointe basket for basket. Eventually, what was a 15-0 after a few minutes was a 30-18 deficit for Denmark-Olar at halftime. Roberts drew contact and got to the free throw line as well. She scored seven points.
Aijalon Wroten Aijalon Wroten 5'3" | PG Denmark-Olar | 2023 State SC – Denmark-Olar HS – There is still plenty that will be written (and said) about Wroten. She was kept off the scoreboard in the first half of the Vikings’ Friday game with South Pointe, but managed to get on said scoreboard in the second half while finishing the game with five points. Wroten will take and make her fair share of 3-pointers. She will also, as she displayed on Friday, make accurate passes which can lead to buckets for one of her teammates. She is currently 51st among Prep Girls Hoops’ 2023s and seventh among point guards among current juniors.
Milaysia Fulwiley Milaysia Fulwiley 5'8" | PG Keenan | 2023 State #9 Nation SC – Keenan HS – Coach Reggie McLean’s offensive game plan for any game the two-time defending 3A champions play in is sure to be full of Fulwiley – and not too many opposing coaches have found answers. She scored 18 points in the Raiders’ contest against JL Mann and did so in a variety of ways. She made a 3-point shot in the second half, attacked the rim and hit her free throws. Among her many basketball attributes that have made her a consistent scoring threat, as well as one who has received national attention, is her passing ability that compliments the points she puts up. That is on top of how quick she is and how active she is as a defender.
Tierra Griffin – Keenan HS – Griffin has proven herself to be in an upper tier of basketball player within South Carolina hoops circles. She was one of the starting five for the Raiders in its game on Friday vs. JL Mann and managed to stay out of foul trouble as only two personals were called against her for the game. Scoring wise, she had one of those common not-how-you-start-but-how-you-finish games. Griffin finished the contest with eight points – and six of those occurred in the second half, which blended in nicely with the 37 points the Raiders tallied in the second stanza as a team.
Tanaja Kennedy Tanaja Kennedy 5'2" | PG Keenan | 2023 State SC – Cardinal Newman – The Cardinals had a thin bench on Friday evening in its game with Camden, so coach Asia Dozier needed its starters to provide lots of minutes and lots of production. She had to be happy with what she saw out of Kennedy as well as the rest of its starting five. Kennedy provided offensive production early and often for Cardinal Newman – part of that often being her two-pointer which closed out the first half. She is also a proficient passer as she looks for ways in which her teammates can be more involved. Kennedy also made a couple of 3-pointers and concluded the evening with 13 points.
