Recapping Polk County Hoopfest – Top Scorers By Michael Wholey 12/31/21 10:00 AM EST The Polk County Hoopfest was held in the AdventHealth Fieldhouse in Winter Haven, FL hosting 50+ teams at the Varsity and JV level in the two-day event. Presented by SUTS Report, the event featured some of the state’s top teams and players. In this article, we take a look at the event’s top scorers. Senior Jada Mack for North Tampa Christian was the event’s high scorer dropping 27 points en route to leading her team to 58 – 43 win over COLCA. At 5’7 she can play both the wing and the forward spot, doing it all for NTCA. Sophomore [player_tooltip player_id="217667" first="Kayla" last="Nelms"] was impressive in her play for Miami Country Day, leading them to a 2-0 record in the event. Her 26 points v Heritage Palm Bay was done both from the inside and out. At 6’2, her ability to mix it up down low in the paint as well as step out to the 3 and knock it down from the perimeter is impressive and unique. 12 of her 26 points came from 3, going 4/6 from 3 leading Miami Country Day to the 81-35 win. Marypaz Martinez is a big, versatile, skilled guard /wing for Central Pointe. She scored 24 points with 2 3-pointers in 62-54 win over Doral. Her combination of offensive skill and length is impressive. She scored by knocking down open shots off the catch, attacking off the dribble, and of mid-range pull ups in the paint. Sophia Munoz picked up the scoring for Central Pointe in their 54-44 win over Timber Creek. Munoz scored 23 Points, 14 of which came in the first half and finished with 3 3-pointers. The young, freshman guard plays hard and aggressive and has a high motor. She was fearless in attacking the rim and pushing the ball in the open court. She followed up her 23 point performance vs Timber Creek, with 20 points vs Doral Academy, and another 20 points including four 3-pointers in a 60-45 win over Lake Gibson, averaging 21 PPG for the event. [player_tooltip player_id="91562" first="Addison" last="Potts"] and her South Fort Myers crew just dropped into the event for one game. The Purdue signee scored 22 points including 4 3-pointers in 48-43 win over Wesley Chapel. Potts is a big, skilled, scoring point guard who has a strong offensive skill set and deep range. Her height allows her to get her shot off over defenders with very little interference as well as see the court and advance the ball vs pressure. She shoots a high percentage from the field, never forcing anything and just letting the game come to her. Jasmynne Gibson did all she could to keep West Orange in the game dropping 22 points in her teams 57-45 loss to Charlotte. It was a fun matchup as Gibson went toe to toe with [player_tooltip player_id="91644" first="D’Yanis" last="Jimenez"] for Charlotte. In the end, Gibson 22 points were not enough as Jimenez scored 20 and led her squad to the 12-point victory. Gibson is a 6’0 Sophomore Forward who plays inside and out. She was active on the boards in addition to her scoring and made her presence known in the paint. Jimenez relied heavily on her ability to attack her defender off the dribble for her scoring efforts. She had a number of 1v1 situations from the top of the key and the wing, where she showcased her ability to breakdown her defender with shifty combination moves and finished well in the paint. 6’1 Senior [player_tooltip player_id="331736" first="Karla" last="Quintero"] was impressive for SLAM! Academy out of Miami dropping 20 points v Holy Trinity, in an impressive 64-49 win over Holy Trinity. Holy Trinity entered the game with a perfect 10-0 record, and SLAM! handed them their first loss of the season. Quintero helped lead her squad to the win by finishing well at the rim, playing out of the high post area showcasing her range out to 15 feet, as well as putting it to the floor. She did a good job drawing contact as she got to the free throw line 10 times, going 4/10 from FT line. Michael Wholey is the lead scout for Florida Prep Girls Hoop Florida and a former division one Assistant Coach at American University, University of Memphis, and Georgia Tech. He also serves as the Director of SUTS Report and was the host of the Polk County Hoopfest. In his role with SUTS Report and Prep Girls Hoop, Wholey covers girls basketball all across the state of Florida, providing in depth coverage of events, analysis and evaluations of individual players performance and seeks to bring exposure to girls basketball in Florida in hopes of creating opportunities for players to continue playing at the collegiate level. Our audience often supplies us with some of our best information. If you have any information on players, teams, or statewide news in the state of Florida, you can email Michael Wholey. He can be reached via email at WholeyPrepHoops@gmail.com or DM him through Twitter or Instagram @WholeyPrepHoops.
