The 2022 New Year’s Classic was held in Miami this past weekend at SLAM! Academy. The two-day event had some of the state’s top teams and players including the state’s # 3 ranked team St. Thomas Aquinas, six-time state champion Miami Country Day, and Batavia High School out of Illinois. The event had a number of close games, great team and individual performances. We take a look at the events top outside shooters!
Reina Green Reina Green 5'10" | CG St. Thomas Aquinas | 2023 State FL (St. Thomas Aquinas) – 5’9 Guard – Class of 2023
Green also had FIVE 3-pointers on her way to 17 points in St. Thomas Aquinas 74-42 win over a talented Batavia squad out of Illinois. What was even more impressive was Green hit all FIVE 3-pointers consecutively in the second quarter breaking the game wide open. St. Thomas Aquinas led by just four points after the 1st quarter 21-17, then came Reina Green Reina Green 5'10" | CG St. Thomas Aquinas | 2023 State FL time! Green dropped 17 points all in the second quarter, scoring 17 of St. Thomas Aquinas 19 points, sending STA into halftime up 40-19, outscoring Batavia 19-2 in the second quarter!
Stephanie Vega (Somerset Silver Palms) – 5’7 Guard – Class of 2026
Vega kicked off the event with a bang knocking down FIVE 3-pointers on the way to a game high 25 points in Somerset Silver Palms 66-39 win over Doral Academy in the first game of the event. Vega has the potential to be one of the state’s top outside shooters and could ultimately break some career records when all is said and done as she is just an 8th grader!
Jordan Race Jordan Race 5'11" | SF King's Academy | 2023 State FL (King’s Academy) – 5’11 Wing – Class of 2023
Race was one of three players to knock down five 3-pointers in the 2022 New Years Classic. Race five 3-pointers accounted for 15 of her team high 19 points, doing her best to keep King’s Academy in the game. FOUR of her FIVE 3-pointers came in the second half and was the lone member of King’s Academy to score in double digits. In the end, it was not enough as King’s Academy fell to St. Thomas Aquinas 55-42.
Ashley Martinez Ashley Martinez 5'4" | SG Somerset Silver Palms Academy | 2026 State FL (Somerset Silver Palms) – 5’5 Guard – Class of 2026
Martinez knocked down FOUR 3-pointers on her way to 16 points in the 66-39 win over Doral Academy in the first game of the event. The 5’5 guard has a bright future in front of her as she is just an 8th grader! Her and Stephanie Vega combined for an impressive NINE 3-pointers combined. The future is bright for Martinez, Vega, and Somerset Silver Palms!
Alexia Sanchez (Doral Academy) – 5’5 Guard – Class of 2023
Sanchez was also hot from the outside in the Doral Academy versus Somerset Silver Palms game! Sanchez knocked down THREE 3-pointers on her way to 13 points. She did her best to keep Doral in the game but it was not enough as Doral fell to Somerset 66-39. The game featured impressive outside shooting as a total of EIGHTEEN 3-pointers were made, accounting for 52 of the games 99 points!
Sofia Mendez Sofia Mendez 5'7" | CG Miami Country Day | 2024 State FL (Miami Country Day) – 5’9 Guard – Class of 2024
Mendez did a little bit of everything in Miami Country Day impressive 64-37 win over Batavia out of Illinois. Mendez made THREE 3-pointers on her way to 15 points in a balanced floor game! Mendez has been a consistent and steady performer for MCDS all season, leading them to an 11-5 record vs a challenging schedule. Her game and role continue to grow as she becomes more comfortable in the Miami Country Day system and with her role on the team.
Kayla Nelms Kayla Nelms 6'1" | PF Miami Country Day | 2024 State FL (Miami Country Day) – 6’2 Forward – Class of 2024
In Miami Country Day lone game in the event, Kayla Nelms Kayla Nelms 6'1" | PF Miami Country Day | 2024 State FL lead them in scoring with 20 points, including THREE 3-pointers in their 64-37 win over Batavia. Nelms ability to stretch defenses and shoot a high percentage from the perimeter makes her a highly rated prospect. At 6’2, she can play inside and outside, shoots a high percentage and is a very skilled and unselfish player which is one of the reasons why she is ranked so highly in the Prep Girls Hoops Florida rankings.
Madisyn McLeod Madisyn McLeod 5'8" | SG Nova HS | 2023 State FL (Nova HS) – 5’9 Guard – Class of 2023
McLeod is a big guard who can make the open 3-pointer when left open. She made THREE 3-pointers on her way to 10 points in Nova’s 58-32 loss to Doral Academy. McLeod was the team’s only player in double figures in a tough matchup against Doral. Her strong frame is a major asset, as she uses it will to get lift in her jump shot and to take contact at the rim.
