On the third day of that new year, the two teams met up at Clover High School – and the result was a 46-19 decision in favor of the Blue Eagles.
The win runs the record of the defending 5A champions to 9-4 while the Vikings’ mark drops to 6-7.
We at Prep Girls Hoops were on hand at Clover for the contest between the two 5A schools. Here is who played integral roles for their teams Monday.
Samara Lucas Samara Lucas 5'11" | PF Clover | 2025 State SC – 2025 – Clover HS – Lucas played plenty of minutes for the Blue Eagles off the bench for coach Sherer Hopkins’ team. She also managed to stay out of foul trouble. Lucas put herself in position to get the better end of 50-50 ball scenarios and drew a tough assignment on defense guarding the Vikings’ sophomore star big Genesis Young Genesis Young 5'10" | PF Spartanburg | 2024 State SC . She executed ball movement well with her teammates and made a good deal of plays near the rim. Lucas concluded her evening having scored 12 points to lead Blue Eagles scorers. Out of those 12, six of them were scored in the first quarter.
Kailyn Smith – 2023 – Spartanburg HS – Smith is a 5-foot-11 frontcourt force the Vikings have been going to battle with. She converted on a high-percentage shot near the rim which put Spartanburg on the board to tie it up at two apiece shortly after Clover did. Smith will grab a fair share of rebounds and will draw contact which will place her at the free throw line. Smith is effective offensively in the interior as well as defensively with how she will block shots. She would lead all Vikings scorers with six points. Smith had one made basket from the field in the first, third and fourth quarters.
Tegan Bertwell – 2022 – Clover HS – It is very common to see Bertwell sporting the Clover colors – whether it is on the basketball court or on the soccer pitch. Bertwell absorbed a lot of contact from start to finish and found herself at the free throw line on several occasions. She also connected on a 3-point try late in the game when the Blue Eagles had the matchup all but in the win column. Most of the time she got on the scoreboard was in the fourth quarter – she finished with 11 points and six of those occurring in the closing stanza.
Genesis Young Genesis Young 5'10" | PF Spartanburg | 2024 State SC – 2024 – Spartanburg HS – Last season, Young had a breakout freshman 2020-21 whose highlights included recording her first double-double, so one had to know similar highlights were in the plans. She puts forth plenty of work near the rim and stays ready to receive passes which she will convert into high-percentage shot opportunities. Young will also draw a bit of contact which will put her at the free throw line. She will be prepared to box out and haul in a rebound in case of a missed free throw. In fact, she stays prepared to collect rebounds throughout the game – in addition to blocked shots. Young scored six points.
Ally Witherspoon – 2022 – Clover HS – Ally’s basketball talents are not withering away anytime soon. She was part of the Blue Eagles’ starting five and finished with a made basket in every quarter except the second. Witherspoon showcased how well she takes care of the ball and actually scored the first points of the game. She also displayed that she has no problems shooting from either midrange or from long range. Witherspoon actually made a pair of shots from 3-point range in the second half and she would score 10 points. Those two treys in the second half were part of the eight points she scored combined between the third and fourth quarters.
Jordan Miller – 2022 – Spartanburg HS – Miller is one of two seniors on a Vikings team where much of the roster is comprised of either seniors or juniors. She will play defense with her hands up and arms active. Miller is a consistent threat to steal the ball away whenever her sneakers make contact with the court. She will make heads up defensive plays and some of them can lead for the Vikings to make things happen in the transition game. Miller will draw contact and find her way to the free throw line as she did on several occasions throughout the game. She scored three points on the evening.
