Of course, there could only be one winner – and the Volunteers took this one in emphatic fashion by virtue of a 44-23 victory over the Rams. The victorious Volunteers still have five games left on its regular season schedule as opposed to only two for Chesterfield.
Prep Girls Hoops made it up to Chesterfield for the day’s matchup. Here are a few things of note from Tuesday’s evening.
Shorthanded
If one is probably wondering why a game between the two teams to beat in the region was so lopsided in favor of one team, it could be because one of the teams did not have its full assortment of available players.
That was the case for head coach Nick Jolly’s Rams. Kierra Diggs Kierra Diggs 5'10" | SF Chesterfield | 2024 State SC (2024) was not available on Tuesday evening due to COVID-19 issues. Diggs has played in 14 games this season and has averaged 14 points, 9.1 rebounds, 4.3 steals and 2.2 assists per game.
Elder Stateswomen (and men)
In between the girls and boys games, Chesterfield HS honored its senior classes from the girls and boys basketball teams as well as its cheerleading squad.
There are four seniors listed on the 2021-22 Rams roster on the girls side. Chesterfield’s boys team has five seniors.
On a Hot Streak
Lately, when the Volunteers have taken the court, the end result has been the team finishing in the win column. Andrew Jackson’s victory over Chesterfield now runs its win streak to 10 consecutive games.
The Volunteers have not dropped a contest since December 14 when head coach Derek Vick’s team dropped a 52-40 result to an out-of-state opponent – Waxhaw Cuthbertson out of North Carolina.
Two of its earlier losses also came to the 5A buzzsaw that is Rock Hill.
Top Performers
As is the case with Andrew Jackson contests, if a team is looking to defeat the Volunteers, it better find a way to contain forward Tamia Watkins Tamia Watkins 6'2" | PF Andrew Jackson | 2025 State SC (2025). The Rams defense had few answers for the 6-foot-1 freshman star as she dropped 24 points to lead all point-getters.
Complimenting another big game from Watkins was eight points from 5-foot-7 eighth grader Ni’yonna Asbelle Ni’yonna Asbelle 5'11" | SF Andrew Jackson | 2026 State SC . Senior co-captain Annsley Vick added six points.
Fittingly on senior night, it would be one of Chesterfield’s 2022’s that contributed a big game to the Rams’ cause. That 2022 was 5-foot-8 center/forward Enija Lockhart who led all Chesterfield scorers with 13 points – including the first four of the game for the Rams. Raeleigh Rivers Raeleigh Rivers 5'5" | SG Chesterfield | 2023 State SC , a 2023 wing, added four points.
Records
Andrew Jackson’s record now stands at 14-3 with its regional record improving to 7-0. The Volunteers remain the lone Region 4-AA squad without a blemish in region games. The Rams now also have a record of 14-3 with a 7-2 mark against regional opponents.
