The road to Lakeland begins this week with state tournament play across South Florida.
In this article, I would like to break down some of the top players in Class 6A Region 4. The No. 1 seed is St. Thomas Aquinas. The Raiders are 22-4 overall and have won five straight games. St. Thomas Aquinas won the 2021 Class 6A title over Wekiva.
2022 [player_tooltip player_id="154841" first="Jada" last="Green"] is a tremendous matchup problem. The 6-foot forward has a unique blend of size and athleticism that will make any opponent feel flustered. Moreover, that issue is metastasized in transition. Green is conditioned to score frequently in the open floor. She has range on her shot with smooth mechanics. Green is a Richmond commit. 2023 [player_tooltip player_id="151282" first="Alancia" last="Ramsey"] is a tough inside presence with scoring ability. The 6-foot forward has plenty of frame to rebound and finish on putbacks. Ramsey's athleticism is solid to defend and block shots.2023’s [player_tooltip player_id="91641" first="Karina" last="Gordon"] and [player_tooltip player_id="219942" first="Reina" last="Green"] are quick on the perimeter. 2022 [player_tooltip player_id="91572" first="Breanna" last="Gustave"] has the frame to attack the basket off the dribble and score.
No. 8 seed North Miami will face St. Thomas Aquinas. 2023 [player_tooltip player_id="349372" first="Fenishka" last="Bertho"] has the size at 6-foot-4 to cause problems down low. If she can create space, anything in her vicinity could lead to a bucket. Her footwork continues to get better and that is one area she can focus on after this season is complete. Bertho is averaging over 19 points, 14.6 rebounds and 5.2 blocks per game. 2022 Desiree Sinclar is a 5-foot-10 forward that is averaging 15.8 points and 6.1 rebounds per game. Therefore, the Pioneers have some talent around the paint. 2025 Lexie Nicolas is a talented guard with good vision. The 5-foot-5 floor leader is averaging a team-best 7.2 assists per game. Moreover, her assist to turnover ratio is over 3/1.
No. 4 seed Lourdes Academy will face No. 5 Blanche Ely. The Bobcats are led by 2024 Luciana Picasso with 15.1 points, 8.7 rebounds, 2.6 steals and 2.2 blocks per game while shooting 60 percent from the field. 2022 Emily Major (40 3pm) and 2023 Ana Sanchez (30 3pm) are possible deep threats. The Tigers are a phenomenal team led by 2022 [player_tooltip player_id="91561" first="Michiyah" last="Simmons"]. The 5-foot-8 guard can jet her way into the paint off the dribble. Simmons has tremendous explosiveness and ability to finish. 6-foot-1 [player_tooltip player_id="217668" first="Gianna" last="Corbitt"] has plenty of size and athletic movement to score inside the key. 6-foot-2 [player_tooltip player_id="91563" first="Mya" last="Kone"] is long and runs the floor well in transition. Her length is a natural problem and will create rebounds.
No. 2 seed Seminole Ridge will face No.7 seed Martin County. The Lady Hawks are 14-1 overall led by 2022’s [player_tooltip player_id="154898" first="Ashley" last="Thornton"] and [player_tooltip player_id="353478" first="Aspen" last="Johnson"]. Both players have combined to average over 33 points, nine rebounds and six assists per game. Stuart Martin County is 13-8 overall. The Lady Tigers have four juniors that average over six points per game. 2023 [player_tooltip player_id="352562" first="Kaylee" last="Gumina"] (12.5 ppg) and Denasia Hilarie (9.7 ppg) lead the way.
No. 3 seed Everglades will face No. 6 seed Dillard.
The Gators have a number of great players included 2024’s Jazyln and Jayln Laguna. 2022 Gloyrn Letlow is a 5-foot-8 wing that can stretch the floor. 2022’s [player_tooltip player_id="352557" first="Uniyah" last="Franklin"] (6’2) and Nyla McKnight (5’10) have size around the post. Everglades is 17-7 overall and have won four straight games. Dillard (19-8) has an athletic big in [player_tooltip player_id="156588" first="Khyala" last="Ngodu"]. The 6-foot-2 forward is averaging over 15 points and ten boards per game. The Panthers have a number of young players, particularly around the perimeter, that continue to develop.
