It was also one of the toughest of the season for the Copperheads as the visiting Bruins from Lancaster gave the homestanding Catawba Ridge squad everything it could handle and then some.
When all was said and done, the Copperheads were once again in a familiar place – the win column by virtue of its 49-44 victory over Lancaster.
Prep Girls Hoops was on site at Catawba Ridge HS for Friday evening’s matchup between the two Region 3-AAAA competitors. Here are some notes and takeaways from Bruins vs. Copperheads.
Bench Points
When a team is able to get productive minutes from its bench, it puts them in position to win lots of games. Coach Ronnie Robinson’s Bruins maintained a lead for a good portion of the third quarter thanks to points off the bench. Lancaster’s bench outscored Catawba Ridge’s 8-1.
Adversity
One element of the game that made it so difficult for the Copperheads was playing much of the contest without two key players in its starting five. Point guard Morgan Davis Morgan Davis 5'10" | PF Catawba Ridge | 2024 State SC (2024) and center Makailah Davis Makailah Davis 5'6" | CG South Meck | 2025 NC (2025) both suffered hard landings in the first half. The sophomore did not play the remainder of the game while the freshman managed to play in the third quarter.
About a Week (or so) Ago…
Friday night’s get-together between Lancaster and Catawba Ridge was the second matchup between the Region 3-AAAA schools in about 10 days. The Copperheads prevailed in that first contest as well, but the final score on January 26 at Lancaster HS was a bit more one-sided than it was on Friday. Catawba Ridge got the better end of a 71-42 decision in that game.
Cold Spell?
The Bruins put up a valiant effort in a game that eventually saw Lancaster in the loss column. After making it through the latter portion of December with only two losses to begin the season, Lancaster has dropped six of its last eight contests.
For Catawba Ridge, its two defeats are to 5A power Rock Hill and Region 3-AAAA foe South Pointe.
Primetime Performers
Lancaster vs. Catawba Ridge might as well have been presented by the numbers 2, 0, 2 and 5 with all of the stellar freshman play that was on display.
The scoring of Skyla Tuthill Skyla Tuthill 5'11" | SG Winston-Salem Christian National | 2025 State NC (2025) willed the Copperheads to victory as she led all point-getters with 35 on the scoreboard. She is an at-will scorer who can put the ball through the hoop from anywhere on the court – midrange, at the rim, 3-point range or the free throw line. Tuthill also rebounds, blocks shots, passes and has developed into a by-example leader – as a freshman.
She also had the lone field goal of the second quarter for Catawba Ridge when the team went cold from the field that frame.
The Bruins were also led points-wise by two standouts in the same class. KeMarja Peay KeMarja Peay 5'10" | PF Lancaster | 2025 State SC (2025) paced Lancaster with 14 points. She can make plays near the rim, rebounds and gets ready to box out in case of an opponent’s missed free throw. If she is fouled, Peay will convert on her free throws.
Eliza Baskins (2025) added nine points. She scored the first two points of the game which came via a midrange jumper. Baskins has no problems driving to the rim or taking 3-point shots. She attracts attention from defenses in the form of double teams and can come up with defensive plays – whether those are steals or pass interceptions.
Lathan Truesdale (2023) contributed eight points off the bench. In addition to how she keeps her hands out on defense, Truesdale converted on a couple of clutch 3-pointers that kept momentum going for the Bruins in the second half.
Records
The Copperheads now stand at 19-2 on the season with a record of 6-1 against Region 3-AAAA adversaries. The Bruins’ record now stands at 10-8 with a mark of 2-4 against opponents in its region.
