Alexis Bordas Alexis Bordas 5'8" | SG Wheeling Park | 2025 State WV nailed her inaugural year as a member of the Wheeling Park Patriots. There’s no doubt about it.
Oh me, oh my.
In reality, Wheeling Park’s baseline goals didn’t include Bordas establishing herself as the lead scorer. No, a team that featured many young players and a plethora of veterans yielding to a freshman may have been too insane. Then again, this is one of the premier programs in the state we are talking about. Perhaps it was a goal, all along.
She ended up excelling all the same.
From the minute she started against John Marshall to the moment she walked off the court against Morgantown in a state semifinal, the young lady rolled on and on. Yes, oh, yes.
Shooting became more accurate, her rebounding ferocity increased, and her outlook on the game improved. You saw it in her game and heard it in her voice.
“I was pretty confident. I have been on lots of different stages and floors, so I was pretty confident whatever court we played on it would be fine. I knew that if I wasn’t hitting shots I could help my teammates in other ways,” Bordas said. That is so right on. Even when she was hitting shots, she still helped her team in other ways.
It wasn’t the Bordas shooting hour, it wasn’t the Bordas rebounding hour, it was a combination of whatever her team needed.
Those following games showed just that in blowouts of Brooke and Indian Creek. If it wasn’t a double-double, it was a surprise. If you only sent one defender, she broke you down and scored anyway. That became most apparent in her bust-out game versus Parkersburg South.
Against the Patriots, she dropped a 50-piece on Ed Davis’ young squad. During that performance, she thrashed and shot and blew the Patriots’ house down. She connected on an absurd 10 of 15 3-point shots. Yet, that was just part of an inspiring effort.
When she received her big break, she really took advantage and connected on 19 of 30 shots overall.
Deep down, she grew more in that one game than perhaps the first five games combined. Parkersburg South head coach Davis brought a tricky defense to town, and Bordas simply shredded it to be quite blunt. That performance there signaled to the rest of the state she wasn’t going quietly into the night, she wouldn’t vanish without a fight, she would be shooting on and on and on and on.
And that’s exactly what she did. Down and down and down teams went one after the other. Everyone tried and everyone, but Morgantown left disappointed with their attempts to shut down Bordas. They simply came up empty and in search of answers.
Her high performance continued into the postseason tournament, where if it wasn’t for Sofia Wassick Sofia Wassick 5'7" | PG Morgantown | 2024 State WV in the section final, the Patriots called The Palace home-field advantage for the regional co-final.
Their response to the setback? A slow start against John Marshall in the regional final. Halftime adjustments ended any hope of an upset though. Once again, Bordas rose to the occasion and make the big plays when they had to happen.
Don’t forget about her state tournament debut. After Bordas missed her first three shots against Jefferson, she regrouped and canned an impressive 24 points.
Overall, she scored 20.6 points, pulled down 6.2 rebounds, grabbed 2.1 assists, and swiped 3.2 steals per game. Basically, the performance left head coach Ryan Young scrambling to find a comparison. When asked he confirmed it was something new for him.
“No, the closest thing is probably Bella Abernathy as her impact on the game, but LaLa (Woods) and Lex have played a lot of basketball they have been in crazy games this year with a lot of pressure which has helped get to this point,” head coach Ryan Young said. Perhaps they came up just short against Morgantown
Now, Bordas enters an AAU season with more confidence than ever.
This is all to say: She certainly earns an A++ for her freshman debut.
