Continue ReadingConcord, North Carolina is a town known for its “High Performance Living.” This past weekend, that moniker was in full effect at the Carolina Courts basketball venue in downtown Concord for the LBI March Madness event.
A number of travel teams representing three states – South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia all converged on Cabarrus County for what was two days of scintillating basketball to get the AAU slate underway.
We at Prep Girls Hoops also made the trip up to Concord for the Saturday schedule of games. Here is a look at a few underclassmen and up-and-comers shined in the Tar Heel State.
Devon Yarde Devon Yarde 5'6" | PG Hilton Head Christian | 2024 State SC – 2024 – Hilton Head Christian Academy – H2Lowco 16U – The travel team Yarde runs with will be part of the Prep Girls Hoops Circuit this spring and summer, meaning there will be plenty of chances for us to see the star sophomore this grassroots campaign. Yarde plays hard on both ends of the floor. She does a great deal of her offensive production from behind the 3-point arc. She makes it tough for defenders to get around her as she is a threat to steal the ball. Yarde will collect a good number of rebounds as well. She scored 12 in an H2Lowco victory on Saturday over Warriors Life Elite.
Tamya Hutchinson Tamya Hutchinson 5'4" | PG Hilton Head Christian | 2024 State SC – 2024 – Hilton Head Christian Academy – H2Lowco 16U – Hutchinson is fresh off her first season with the Eagles – one where she was a key piece in Hilton Head Christian winning a fourth consecutive SCISA 2A championship. The nucleus of her offensive game is her ability to attack the rim, but will also attempt to make things happen from 3-point range as well. She is not afraid to draw contact and knows it will place her at the free throw line. Hutchinson uses her speed to her advantage, gets out in transition, is an accurate passer and delivers all-around hustle.
Samara Lucas Samara Lucas 5'11" | PF Clover | 2025 State SC – 2025 – Clover HS – Charlotte Dream Elite 16U – The 16U roster for Charlotte Dream Elite is well-represented with three Eagles as part of this year’s rendition. Listed at 5-foot-11, the skillset of the Clover star freshman includes getting in position near the rim to shoot high-percentage shots. She will also corral a good number of rebounds and will draw contact to find her way to the free throw line. Lucas will go after 50-50 balls and will welcome drawing tough defensive assignments. She moves the ball well, operates within the flow of an offense and has established herself as a frontcourt stalwart.
Gabby Moore Gabby Moore 5'4" | PG First Baptist | 2027 State SC – 2027 – H2Lowco 14U – Here is a name on the South Carolina basketball scene that fans may want to keep a close eye on in the coming seasons. Moore gave more for H2Lowco 14U in its matchup with North Carolina-based Sandhills Lady Spartans 14U. She played with plenty of toughness and tenacity. Moore tallied 17 points in her team’s victory over Sandhills Lady Spartans 14U and scored a bit of those points after drawing contact and getting to the line. Moore also was successful in attacking the rim as well as in the midrange game. She poses problems on defense as well with her knack for corralling steals, forcing opposing teams into turnovers and blocking shots in transition. Moore delivers all-out hustle.
