I happen to know, been out here since the turn of the century my goal has and will always be to showcase those players that can move on after high school. I primarily covered the 16U Division at #PGHDynastyRegionKickOff and I wanted to drop my Top 5, I’ll also drop a 2nd Team as well as an Honorable Mention plus a variety of other stories, like Breakout Stars so stay tuned as we have officially KICKED OFF
Kyla Reed-5’3 PG (Metro Christian Academy) Team Griffin Select 2024 Funderbunk [2024]
Reed mixed it up nicely on the offensive end starting with her ball-handling in the open court where pressure was irrelevant and watching her see the floor under that same pressure and make pinpoint passes in traffic was nice yet what set it off, even more, was her ability to create in the set. Her deceptive first step enabled her to get wherever she wanted to take take the pull-up jumper, she knocked it down with a hand in her face but she also attacked the basket strongly and finished after contact. She understands how to “trap” and plays good “on the ball defense” yet her playing the passing lane over and over just did it for me
Taylor Spencer-5’7 CG (Cleveland HS) Houston Lady Nets 2024 [2024]
Spencer For Hire was one of my favorite series from last century yet this Spencer is steadily becoming one of my “must-see” players simply because she understands how to take over games, on both ends of the court and from the guard position, that’s very special. Her cat-like instincts and quick hands forced numerous turnovers throughout the event but she’s vocal on the court and her unselfishness definitely stood out because she can drop it from mid to long-range with a hand in her face yet her acrobatic finishes, even after contact are still flashing in my head but what is else is flashing is that lightbulb saying she’ll be added to next Top 100 update
Grace Booth Grace Booth 5'10" | SG Glen Rose | 2024 State TX 5’10 SG (Hico HS) West Texas Shockers 2024 [2024]
Booth doesn’t need to step out of one to turn into Superwoman, wait they don’t even phone booths anymore, that’s a #THROWBACK but so is she, and watching her do what college coaches love to see, a big guard that can flat out shoot, was nice. I love how she plays the same no matter what, that’s always a sign and her being heady and reading plays before they happen always makes me smile yet she understands mismatches and can post up smaller guards as well as take them off the dribble, well she did the same against big guards as well but she rebounded on both ends, saw the floor and played solid defense
Ella Martin 6’1 SF (Union HS) Team Griffin Elite 2024 Owens [2024]
Martin did something that deserved the “drop the mic” award yet I used my notebook instead and that was a “no-look touch-pass” you can’t teach that and I love when players can do things instinctively so that definitely got my adrenaline going so seeing her flat out knock down shots with ease was telling me a lot about what I was looking at. She understands how to set the defender up, she elevates on her jumper, her shot is fluid and when you can consistently knock down the midrange, that’s a lost art, by the way, that, combined with her size will keep her on many college coaches shortlists
Brooklyn Hurtada-6’0 C (Cisco) Texas Platinum 2024 Bruce [2024]
Hurtado showed she was going to be a force to be reckoned with on opening day in the opening game and using her size, strength and skillset set the tone on not only what was coming for the KICKOFF but the PGH Circuit as well. Her ability to score in the paint with players literally hanging on her goes back to me mentioning her strength to open things up but she also rebounded on both ends, yes she scored on putbacks and her running the floor, on both ends also was a highlight for me especially when she showed she could rebound, throw the outlet, run the floor and finish
