The southeast-based Triumph Region of the Prep Girls Hoops Circuit got off to an exciting start this past weekend at the IMG Academy campus in Bradenton, Florida. Among those that showed up to show out in the Sunshine State were the litany of 17U teams that were on hand. Florida is a state that sometimes gets overlooked in terms of girls basketball talent, but it is plentiful throughout the state from the Panhandle to South Beach. One may have already seen who we chose as part of our All-Tournament 17U first team. Without further adieu, here is who Prep Girls Hoops picked as representatives for its 17U second team. [caption id="attachment_412771" align="alignnone" width="300"] Photo: Prep Girls Hoops[/caption] [player_tooltip player_id="243948" first="Maggie" last="Lauber"] – 2023 – Durant HS – Nona Basketball Academy 2023 – Nona Basketball Academy finished the Triumph Region Kickoff with an unblemished weekend – and the team has Lauber in large part ot thank. Whether it was drawing contact and sinking a few critical free throws or what she does as a ball distributor, Lauber played a big role in her team’s undefeated run throughout the tournament. Lauber is also an accurate shooter from 3-point range as well as a consistent threat to steal the ball and go the other way with it. She is a dual sport athlete who has exceled on the flag football field in addition to the basketball court. [caption id="attachment_412772" align="alignnone" width="300"] Photo: Prep Girls Hoops[/caption] [player_tooltip player_id="331748" first="Geriya" last="Grady"] – 2023 – Boca Ciega HS – Grindhouse Elite Club 2023 – [player_tooltip player_id="331748" first="Geriya" last="Grady"] goes hard for Grindhouse. She does as well for the Pirates that finished with a 19-6 record and a berth in last season’s 5A postseason. Grady’s ball handling skills enable her to attack the rim in addition to how she will shoot the ball from range. On plenty of occasions, she will find herself at the right place at the right time on the court Her tough defense places opposing ball carriers in precarious situations where they are at risk of turning the ball over – for Grady to take advantage of those miscues and go the other way in transition. [caption id="attachment_412773" align="alignnone" width="300"] Photo: Prep Girls Hoops[/caption] [player_tooltip player_id="221705" first="Laketrice" last="Peterson"] – 2024 – Blanche Ely HS – Team Knight 2023 3SSB – Prior to wearing the Team Knight 2023 3SSB uniform, she ran on the grassroots circuit with GT Queens 2024. Peterson is an anchor for the Tigers’ frontcourt – including on the defensive side where she maintains a heads-up mentality where one mistake by an opposing ball handler becomes a turnover. Peterson converts on high-percentage opportunities in the low post, grabs rebounds and wins many a battle on the boards. She played her middle school basketball at Lauderdale Lakes before she began wearing the green and orange at Blanch Ely at the high school level. [caption id="attachment_412775" align="alignnone" width="300"] Photo: Prep Girls Hoops[/caption] [player_tooltip player_id="352555" first="Bryanna" last="Griffiths"] – 2023 – Port Charlotte HS – FGC Miracle Gold 2023 – Speaking of frontcourt anchors, the Pirates, who (fittingly) made waves in its first season as a 4A school, have one in its 5-foot-11 big. She is a consistent threat to manage a double-double with how well she scores and how much she bolsters a team’s rebounding efforts. As much as she gets done in the interior, Griffiths also has a can drain shots from midrange as well as long range. She has offensive versatility with an ability to attack the rim and defensive tenacity with a knack for blocking shots. [caption id="attachment_412776" align="alignnone" width="300"] Photo: Prep Girls Hoops[/caption] [player_tooltip player_id="335879" first="Sha’nya" last="Lake"] – 2024 – Jenkins County HS (GA) – Lady Grinders 2023 – Lake plays for one of the couple of Georgia-based teams that made the trip to IMG Academy for the Triumph Region Kickoff. Lake is an efficient handler of the ball who will slice and dice through defenses en route to a feed to an open teammate or a two-point layup. She can organize an offense in a halfcourt set and will drain her fair share of shots from the floor. Lake can have her hands outstretched on defense and can switch on who she is guarding, making her a real problem for opposing offenses. Lake is also a two-sport athlete as she has flourished on the softball diamond in the fall (softball is played during the fall in Georgia).
