Living in South Jersey, I’ve gotten a chance to cover a lot of the talent and programs here, including the best of the best freshmen prospects in the region. Here are five undervalued prospects from the region in the updated rankings.
No. 63: Lyla Brown Lyla Brown SG Egg Harbor Twp. | 2025 NJ – SG, Egg Harbor Twp.
In the always-competitive Cape Atlantic League, Brown separated herself from the pack with speed and scoring. Her defense is what has garnered the most attention to date, swarming opponents to force bad possessions. She’s able to cause multitudes of turnovers, which turned into fast break opportunities on the other end of the floor. Brown is a good spot-up perimeter shooter and likes to play up-tempo to throw off opponents. Her scoring opportunities were plentiful and will increase going into next season.
No. 80: Jill Watson Jill Watson 5'6" | PG Northern Burlington | 2025 State NJ – SF, Northern Burlington
Watson picked up production in the latter half of the season for Northern Burlington after missing a chunk of time in January. She posted seven double-digit scoring performances during the season, making her presence felt in the lane. She posts up well and was able to keep Northern Burlington in games just based on her post presence alone. Watson found consistency as the season waned on and is more than capable of double-figure scoring averages.
No. 76: Azanah Campbell Azanah Campbell 5'9" | SF Paul VI | 2025 State NJ – PF, Paul VI
Campbell is next in line after Sara McShea Sara McShea 5'10" | PF Paul VI | 2022 State NJ ’s great Paul VI career and will be a fitting addition in the middle for this team. Looking at her build already, she’s looks to make moves in the lane and welcomes contact well. Having a fearless mindset with the basketball gives a player that extra set of confidence to make moves. Campbell has easy double-double potential moving forward and adds in passing as well, a developing ability for centers across the board. With more experience, she’ll become a better defensive player overall, both more mature and more dominant.
No. 57: Talia Battavio Talia Battavio 5'7" | SG Woodstown | 2025 State NJ – SG, Woodstown
Riley Fulmer Riley Fulmer PG Woodstown | 2022 State NJ and Battavio created a great duo on the court this season for Woodstown. The senior Fulmer brought with her plenty of wisdom and experience to pass on to the freshman, who’s done well in her own right to become an excellent perimeter shooter right out of the gate. Battavio knocked down 26 threes on the season, getting to the line often and creating her own shot in the lane. Her 9.6 points per game was among the highest on the team, a great sign for the future. Battavio’s defense is nothing to scoff at either, with quick reflexes and a high basketball IQ that creates turnovers and gets Woodstown on the break.
No. 47: Ashley Flynn Ashley Flynn PG Audubon | 2025 NJ – PG, Audubon
Flynn has run the point for the Green Wave this season and has done well in that position, grinding out results inside the perimeter. She averaged just over 10.0 points a game as a freshman, an impressive total for the first-year player. There are improvements to be made with her defense and passing, but both have shown signs of promise. Her scoring is her main forte right now, which she’s done incredibly well, but those secondary tools are going to turn her into a superstar. We’ll be watching for that development this summer going into next season.
