Continue ReadingSummerville HS has become used to having great girls basketball played at The Fire House. More of it took place this past weekend at the Green Wave’s home court as it played host to the Lowcountry Summer Shootout.
The 5A school has statewide significance given this past season the Green Wave were one win shy of bringing its first ever girls basketball state championship to Boone Hill Road (Summerville won in boys basketball in 2008). Around 10-20 teams converged on Summerville HS for the weekend festivities and all of them are based in the Lowcountry.
We at Prep Girls Hoops also made the trip to Summerville for the Saturday of the event. Here is a look at a few rising sophomores who do not look like they will be entering a slump anytime soon.
Nevaeh Matthews – Summerville HS – Lowcountry Premier 15U – Matthews had to feel right at home on the Green Wave home court that she has become accustomed to. With her ability to drain a number of attempts from long range, it is easy to see why Matthews possesses such a high degree of confidence in said shot. In addition, she runs the floor with a great degree of efficiency which can come in handy in transition situations. Matthews will attract double teams from defense, haul in rebounds, attack the basket and set up her team’s offense in halfcourt situations. Matthews tallied 12 points in a matchup with Palmetto Stampede.
Logan Collins Logan Collins 5'6" | PG Stall | 2025 State SC – Lucy Beckham HS – Lowcountry Premier 15U – Logan knows best how to put in effort to win basketball games. She participated in 21 of them in 2021-22 and was one of many breakout freshmen throughout the state. As a rising sophomore, she hopes to build on that first-year success. Collins is willing to absorb contact that can put her at the free throw line. She also will play stout defense that can result in her compiling steals. She is an efficient floor runner that knows when to score and when to pass and comes through on plenty of occasions as a scorer and rebounder.
Brianna Williams Brianna Williams 5'5" | SG Stall | 2025 State SC – Stall HS – Lowcountry Premier 16U – Williams is listed at 5-foot-4 and displayed exactly why she is playing up a year in class. She displays an ability to take care of the ball and does some of the little things that may not appear on a stat sheet – such as hustle for 50-50 balls. Williams can get out in transition and convert on high-percentage opportunities near the rim in addition to connecting on 3-point tries. Defensively, she can be counted on to get opponents to commit turnovers and create extra offensive possessions for her team. She also throws defenses off balance as they may not anticipate if she will attack or pass when she goes at the rim.
Perry Chambers Perry Chambers 6'3" | C Porter Gaud | 2025 State SC – Porter-Gaud HS – Dynamic Sports Team – Chambers’ athletic career has also included a stint on the Cyclones’ junior varsity volleyball team and she was the lone freshman on the varsity basketball squad. As she stands at 6-foot-2, she presents a formidable height advantage many a coach would love to have in the frontcourt. Chambers will absorb contact and find her way to the free throw line and can also connect on midrange jump shots. She stays active at all times on the court – including when she does not have the ball in her hands and can come through on defense as a shot blocker, utilizing her length as an extension of her 6-foot-2 frame.
Grayson Hariri Grayson Hariri 5'8" | SG Porter Gaud | 2025 State SC – Porter-Gaud HS – Dynamic Sports Team – Prep Girls Hoops recently got a glimpse of Hariri at the Charleston Challenge at Cathedral Academy. She too was previously listed on the junior varsity volleyball roster. Hariri is confident in her ability to drain 3-pointers and can switch on who it is she is defending. Her scoring capabilities are complimented by her having a knack for making the correct passes as well as getting out into the open floor and making important plays in transition. Hariri is poised for a breakout 2022-23 on a Cyclones team that will look very different from last season’s rendition.
