Over the ensuing several weeks, Prep Girls Hoops will continue to put a spotlight on the state’s premier players via our county-by-county rankings. We have already examined a good portion of the state, but there is still plenty more of Palmetto State to go.
Next up are Calhoun and Orangeburg Counties. This area boasts a team that made a deep run in last season’s 1A playoffs, one of the signature 3A programs in the state and the 2021-22 SCISA 2A runners-up.
The 2021-22 campaign was a banner one for the Indians’ program. Delaney, the team’s star senior, notched her 1,000th career point and the team’s coach, Jan Stoudenmire, got to the 700-victory plateau. Delaney and Orangeburg Prep will now be part of SCISA’s 3A region. She stands at 5-foot-6 and can play worthy minutes either in the backcourt as a guard or in the frontcourt as a forward. Offensively, she displays her versatility and has a knack for knocking down shots either from the free throw line or from midrange. Delaney is poised to conclude her high school career with an exclamation point.
Keyosha Hammond
Keyosha Hammond
Hammond is another of the many dual-sport athletes that make up the South Carolina high school basketball landscape with her second sport of choice being softball. She played in 10 games last season and averaged 13 points per contest for the Region 4-1A Eagles. Defensively, she can gather steals and create extra possessions for her team. Hammond is quick with the ball in her hands, can make things happen in the transition game and also can be accurate from 3-point range. Making accurate passes and converting on her free throw attempts are two other elements to Hammond’s game.
Wright is coming off an AAU season with Team USC Unleashed 2024 that saw her compete in a few events as part of the Triumph Region of the Prep Girls Hoops Circuit. One of those events was Knoxville Knockout at Rocky Top Sports World. She has an affinity for driving to the rim as well as one for sinking deep triples. Wright also possesses experience playing at Cross. Wright’s scoring prowess is complimented by what she gets accomplished on the defensive end of the floor as she can get opponents to turn the ball over and manufacture extra possessions for her team.
Prep Girls Hoops noticed Yonce with Orangeburg Prep at a recent camp at Cathedral Academy. Previously, she wore the colors of Wardlaw Academy where she also padded her athletic resume through her volleyball and softball work. Mostly, she will play as a big and showcases her confidence as she will call for the ball when she is sure she can make a play – which is often. In addition, rebounding is another key element to what she does and she is unafraid of contact that can place her at the free throw line. She will be part of an Indians team that will now be part of SCISA’s 3A division.
