There are names from Dillon to Hilton Head Island and Landrum to Oceanside that deserve their flowers and we at Prep Girls Hoops are giving out plenty of bouquets via our county-by-county rankings. We are taking a look at every geographical region in the state and identifying its star players.
We have already written three articles on the standouts in Colleton and Dorchester Counties given the area is loaded with talent. Now, we put a spotlight on its sophomore and freshman sensations.
Chisolm is coming off a historic season with the 5A Green Wave that saw Summerville come within one win shy of its first-ever state championship. Last season, Chisolm had a breakout freshman season at The Fire House as she average 8.6 points and 1.7 steals per matchup. Chisolm is skilled as a transition scorer as she combines her speed and ball handling skills. She also is gifted as a 3-point shooter. Coach Calvin Davis lost several seniors (including Lander commit Jasmine Grant and Pensacola State commit Terranique Polite) from last year’s 5A runners-up rendition, meaning Chisolm will be more of a featured element to the Green Wave in the coming seasons.
Until a few weeks ago, this multi-talented point guard probably would have appeared on our Berkeley County list given it is where Cross HS is located. But President made a capital move by transferring from the Trojans to 5A Ashley Ridge. She has made moves as a soccer player just as much as she has in basketball. She has plenty of games where she puts points on the board and defensively she proves herself as an asset with helping out with double teams. President attacks the rim, is adept as a ball distributor, drains 3-point attempts, changes directions while dribbling and gets steals as a defender.
Mack is o-Kai at Fort Dorchester. Mack has played varsity with the 5A Patriots since she was in the eighth grade and she put together a breakout season as a freshman. Coach Javon Gilliard appreciates greatly the versatility Mack brings to the table as she can operate at a variety of positions – including as a forward, a big or a wing. Mack stands at 5-foot-10 and combines height with length. She creates a presence in the interior, can get through defenders and is willing to absorb contact to get to the free throw line. Mack brings a no-quit attitude to every play.
Thomas competed in 20 games in 2021-22 for coach Calvin Davis’ Green Wave. With the success the team experienced last season by advancing to the 5A state championship game, she will be part of a Summerville team with a chance to build on that euphoria. Thomas does much of her work in the frontcourt as either a forward or a center and a good part of that pertains to her ability to grab rebounds. Along with setting screens, Thomas plays the game on contact which creates plenty of Green Wave opportunities at the free throw line. She ran grassroots this past spring and summer with Team Curry 15U.
With the pool of young talent that is comprising what will be an intriguing Swamp Foxes roster in 2022-23, Hartzog stands out as one of those up-and-comers to keep a close eye on. Hartzog is a 5-foot-7 forward who also can find time in the backcourt as a guard. She played in 18 games last season and found productive minutes as a defender by getting steals for her team. Coach Jimmy Brown will be in his first season at the helm at Ashley Ridge – meaning he will have a front row seat to see how Hartzog develops into her own in the coming seasons.
Edmondson is another element to the youth movement that is crystallizing itself at Ashley Ridge. Previously, Edmondson ran grassroots with Lowcountry Premier Ballers 15U. She is listed at 5-foot-5 and played in 19 games in 2021-22 for the 5A Swamp Foxes. Edmondson can be counted on to deliver timely baskets and those will surely increase as she becomes more experienced in her career. When taking into consideration her overall play, she is sure to continue to play an integral role for an Ashley Ridge team and incoming coach Jimmy Brown who only graduated two seniors – including a star guard – from last season.
Davidson had herself a noteworthy time during the AAU season with Team USC Unleashed 2024 which included a stop at Rocky Top Sports World in Tennessee at Knoxville Knockout – a Prep Girls Hoops Circuit Triumph Region event. Davidson will put her speed to great use on both offense and defense. She takes a team-first approach to how she plays and operates with a knack for wanting to get her teammates involved in the flow of a game. As much of a ball distributor as she is, she is also a threat to score. Davidson is another element to the robust youth movement incoming coach Jimmy Brown (formerly at Burke) will field with the Swamp Foxes.
Tucker participated at the Charleston Challenge at Cathedral Academy. While she will participate in the upcoming season with the Patriots, she balled out alongside the host Generals at the event. Tucker can put points on the board either from deep or from close. She is a tough kid who has no issues absorbing contact that can put her at the free throw line. Tucker has a knack for changing directions when she has the ball in her hand and weaving her way through defenses. She brings a pass-first mentality to every game she plays and can bolster a team’s defense.
Coach Calvin Davis managed to land a pair of sophomore Daugherty sisters from the Huntington North program in Indiana outside of Fort Wayne. A youth movement will appear to be on full display in the coming seasons at The Fire House. Listed at 5-foot-11, she brings both height and length to the table for Summerville. Daugherty can bring a 3-point shooting element to the Green Wave’s offense and also knows how to drive around defenders en route to the rack. She understands how to make things happen in a pick and roll offense and makes the right passes to get her teammates involved in the flow of a game.
She is the second of the Daughtery sisters that will be sporting the gold and green of the Green Wave from the cultural hotbed of basketball that is Indiana. Observers have her as the stronger of the two, but can find the bulk of her playing time as a small forward. She managed to land a Division II from Grand Valley State in Michigan. The 5-foot-8 up-and-comer plays with a consistent motor and is tabbed as the more physical of the sisters Daugherty. She, along with her sister Emma, were part of a Vikings team that finished 18-5 last season along with a berth in the 4A IHSAA tournament.

That youth movement that the Swamp Foxes appear to be in the midst extends to this year’s class of freshmen. Hardy earned playing time last season as an eighth grader and managed to hold her own against some of the best the 5A ranks had to offer. Hardy also plays on the soccer team at Ashley Ridge and there are skills she has acquired that are certainly interchangeable between the two sports. Hardy may stand at 5-foot-3 and plays primarily as a guard but she is one that possesses plenty of upside and will be one to keep a close eye on as her career blossoms in the coming seasons.
She came through as a key player in Cathedral Academy’s run to qualifying for the SCISA 1A championship game this past season. She also has ran grassroots with Coastal Select. Pouyat has a mindset to want to pass first, but knows how to score. Two of the ways she accomplishes this are from behind the 3-point line and at the free throw line on the heels of absorbing contact. She also possesses ball handling skills that allow her to find her way out of defenses and away from precarious situations. Ball distribution is another element to her game. Pouyat has played varsity with the Generals since she was a seventh grader. Cathedral Academy was reclassified by SCISA as a 2A school for 2022-24.
