Throughout the last few months, Prep Girls Hoops has traveled (virtually) the Palmetto State via our county-by-county rankings. It is our unique way of shining a light on every area’s standouts as we inch ever closer to the tip off of the 2022-23 season.
Next up on our county list are Kershaw and Lancaster counties which includes a team that qualified for the 3A state championship last season and is receiving national attention because of big name junior.
2023s
The 2022-23 Bulldogs will have plenty of height to go along with the litany of talent that they will present. Add Harris’ 5-foot-11 to the other noteworthy forces in the frontcourt they have and scoring points on Camden will be extremely difficult. Harris ran on the grassroots circuit with Team Curry 17U but also participated with Palmetto 76ers Select 2023 on the Prep Girls Hoops Circuit on its Triumph Region. That included a stop at Georgia’s McEachern High School for Peach Games. Scoring, shot blocking, rebounding and toughness are among her strengths. Harris received an offer from Columbia HBCU Benedict College this summer.
McCloud is the only senior on our list and plays in the northernmost areas of Lancaster County near Charlotte – not exactly what we would term as “off the grid.” She shared the team captaincy duties from last season with one of the seniors who has now graduated. McCloud competed in all 21 games for the 4A Warriors last season and managed to pace Indian Land with her scoring, rebounding and defense as a collector of steals and a shot blocker. She averaged 18.1 points, 8.4 rebounds, 2.8 steals and 1.1 blocks per game in 2021-22. McCloud can play productive minutes as either a two or as a three.
2024s
There are those that are in the “good” category. There are those that are in the “great” category. Then, there are those that are in the “needs no introduction” category as is the case with the top-ranked 2024 in the nation. At this point, it may be easier to name the schools that have not offered Edwards than it is to name those that have. She ran on the grassroots circuit with FBC United 17U and led Camden to the 3A championship game where she posted a double-double with 24 points and 14 rebounds. The Bulldogs will be heavy favorites to win it all in 3A play this upcoming season.
Highlights
Coach Natalie Jeffcoat-Norris’ 3A Camden bunch will be favorites to win it all this season not only because of Edwards, but because of the team around Edwards. That includes the Bulldogs’ star 5-foot-5 guard who competed in 28 matchups for Camden in 2021-22. She proves her efficiency not only scoring-wise but as a ball distributor. She can have the ball in her hands virtually anywhere on the floor and find a way to ensure the ball goes through the hoop. Defensively, she makes things uncomfortable for opposing ball handlers and those can lead to extra possessions for her team.
When Camden hosts senior night in a couple of years, that is going to be an event given what its 2024 class is resembling. With the success and the attention the program has received the past couple of years, it can be easy to overlook how Jeffcoat also competes in track and field. One of her many strengths is her ability to drain 3-point attempts. Jeffcoat is listed at 5-foot-6 and primarily plays the two. Her court vision and ability to make the right passes is another part of what is a complete game for the Camden junior.
