Following a dismal 2021-22, coach Steve Inabinet’s Bengals look massively improved as evidenced by their ability to give more established powers such as Lexington and A.C. Flora all that they can handle.
The latest test for the Bengals were the 2A Griffins from Fairfield Central who suffered a narrow defeat at the hands of Lancaster then earned its first win of the season over Newberry.
Blythewood passed said test as evidenced by its 55-30 victory over the visiting Griffins.
Records
The defeat for Fairfield Central pushes its early mark down to 1-2. As for the Bengals, its record now stands at 4-2 with roughly a month left to go before the team begins Region 3-AAAAA play where teams such as Rock Hill, Spring Valley, Clover and Fort Mill will await.
Tone-Setter
On many occasions, the tone of a game can be established in the first few minutes. Blythewood’s matchup with Fairfield Central was no exception as the Bengals began Tuesday evening’s contest with a 6-0 run.
How Things Progressed
That 6-0 run for Blythewood eventually translated to a 13-2 lead for the homestanding Bengals after the first quarter. When the contest reached halftime, Blythewood had more than doubled up on the Griffins as they established a 28-13 advantage at halftime.
The Bengals continued to pour on the points and keep their foes from Fairfield Central off the scoreboard in the third quarter as the gap grew to 22 following three frames. Blythewood’s lead was 39-17 heading into the fourth quarter.
Primetime Performers
The Bengals got a big game from their freshman standout in Hayley Hightower. The 5-foot-6 freshman guard led the charge for Blythewood with 23 points. She had 13 at the half.
India Williams, another part of Blythewood’s young nucleus, contributed 15 points to the Bengals’ cause. Nine of her 15 were tallied in the second half.
Fairfield Central’s star sophomore guard Jordyn Adams Jordyn Adams 5'6" | PG Fairfield Central | 2025 State SC was one of the primary point-getters for the Griffins on Tuesday night. Adams concluded her evening with a 15-point effort.
The Griffins were also the beneficiary of 11 points from another 2025 in their six-foot big Zanariah Yarborough Zanariah Yarborough 6'0" | PF Legacy Early College | 2025 State SC . Between her and Adams, they had 26 of Fairfield Central’s 30 points.
What Happened Last Time?
Prior to Tuesday night, the last time the Griffins and Bengals met was during the 2017-18 season at Fairfield Central. The Griffins, who were a Class AAA school at the time, won a matchup that can be classified more as a defensive struggle with the final score being 33-26.

This Friday, the Bengals will continue its homestand as they host 4A Ridge View. As for the Griffins, they will continue its road trip next Wednesday when they take on 4A Lancaster.
