Continue ReadingLindsey Davis Lindsey Davis 5’8″ | SG Nodaway Valley | 2024 State IA led her Nodaway high school team to a 97-18 victory over Bedford on Tuesday night while scoring a school single game record of 43 points. Davis, a high ranking player in her respective class, scored in every way imaginable for her team last night while a bunch of her fellow teammates also recorded career highs in scoring on their way to victory. Nodaway high school comes into this season as one of the top teams in their class and that hasn’t changed. They have started with a record of 5-1 with their only loss coming to a high school in a larger class then themselves in the Solon Spartans, who are also a highly ranked team in the state in their own class. I expect Nodaway to keep on winning and Davis to be the leader while they do so. I don’t expect her to average 40 a night but it’s nice to see this break out game from her when it’s always been achievable.
Highlights
Ava Locklear Ava Locklear 5’11” | SF Clear Creek Amana | 2024 State IA may not of led her team in points in their 75-57 win over Solon on Tuesday night but she scored 16 points paired along with 16 rebounds, an incredible stat line to say the least. Locklear is the senior leader of this CCA Clippers team and plays with a good amount of young talent. Some other major players making a difference last night were Olivia Miller and Bliss Beck who each added 18 points of their own in the contest. Coming into this week I said that this match-up would come down to how much the deep bench of CCA would contribute against a very good Spartan team. They ended up doing enough to get a big win at home along with learning a lot about themselves in the process. This team has some great pieces from freshman through seniors and if they keep playing like this, they will see themselves at state when it comes that time. When it comes to Locklear it’ll be interesting to see where she ends up as she is receiving interest for a good amount of colleges from around her area.
Cedar Rapids-Kennedy got a big three point victory over Cedar Falls high school on the road on Tuesday night. Kaliyah Sain Kaliyah Sain 5’10” | SF Cedar Rapids Kennedy | 2023 State IA led the charge scoring 25 points, 7 assists, and 6 steals while doing a little bit of everything in the win. Sain, who is off to a great start again this year for her senior season, is doing all she can when she steps on the court to will her team to victory. It is no easy challenge as they have lost a good amount of key players to graduation from a year ago. In the contest yesterday Sain controlled the game, played well and efficiently on both sides of the floor, and was a vocal leader to the teammates around her. She also received some help from her teammates in the win with some contributions from players such as Addy Alber who recorded 12 points, 12 rebounds, and Ella Moser Ella Moser 5’8″ | SG Cedar Rapids Kennedy | 2025 State IA who had 11 points, 3 steals. For this team to make a big splash once playoffs come around everyone will need to continue to keep up production across the board. If they do that and Sain keeps up her great game play, Kennedy will be able to beat anyone in front of them on any given night.
Aili Tanke Aili Tanke 6’0″ | SG Johnston | 2024 State IA and the Johnston Dragons got another big win last night to keep their season record perfect up until this point while looking like the #1 team in the 5A class once again, coming off of a state championship a year ago. Tanke posted 8 points and 11 rebounds in their 6 point victory over (#6) Ankeny Centennial Tuesday evening. Like usual Johnston had a number of different players make a difference all over the floor in this game but I think that this was one of the first games where Johnston seemed beatable in some aspects. Tanke, an Iowa State women’s basketball commit, paired along with their other top 6-7 players on this Dragons squad make for a long game for opponents. The skill and ability Tanke possesses alone is enough to shine anywhere in the country but with this team I think she completes their “puzzle” to being successful each season. I can’t wait until the state tournament this year where they will have to face the toughest test’s they have had on the journey to trying to repeat as state champs.
