Trishelle Miller
The Sioux City East freshman has been an impact player for the Black Raiders since the second the first tipoff this season. Miller currently leads the team in scoring and assists this season and has a positive assist-to-turnover ratio. Her ability to carry a significant workload and thrive with that responsibility is noteworthy. Miller led her team to a 6-1 start to the season and has been one of the focal points for the Black Raiders.
Syndey Doeschot
The freshman from Kingsley-Pierson has had a standout first nine games of her first high school campaign. The 5-foot-6 guard is an excellent athlete and has a visible burst when she decides she wants to attack the basket. I love Doeschot’s shot and believe it will only improve over time. She’s a newcomer at a small school, but her time in high school will be intriguing because she’s a game-changer now, and there’s no reason she won’t continue to improve.
If you don’t miss shots, it’s hard to lose. Tanke is one of, if not the top shooter in the state. With splits of 53/47/80 and doing it against some of the best teams in the state, the Iowa State commit has led Johnston in scoring as the Dragons look to claim back-to-back state titles. Since Tanke and the Dragons lost the 5A title game to Waukee in the 2020-21 season, they’ve ripped off 36 consecutive wins. With how Tanke and co. are playing, that streak will be challenging to their opposition to snap this season.
I don’t know if there is anyone who’s taken the early portion of the season by storm quite like Palmer. Although Iowa City hasn’t been as competitive as they were a season ago, for multiple reasons, Palmer has taken her opportunity in stride. As the No. 1 option, she’s been outstanding. Palmer is scoring efficiently as one of the main options and dealing with the pressure defenses bring her way. It also shows her unselfishness that she’s one of the team’s leaders in assists in their first seven games.
