The Y.C. Winborn Classic, named in honor of the revered coach and teacher at Rock Hill HS, has been a tradition at the home of the Bearcats for over 10 years. This year’s is taking place over a span of three days and has welcomed a number of teams from both South and North Carolina.
We at Prep Girls Hoops also made the trip up to Rock Hill for day two of the event. Here are recaps of the matchups we had a chance to take in.
Airport vs. Indian Land
The first contest of the day at the main gym at Rock Hill HS featured a Midlands team squaring off against a team from not that far away from Rock Hill. It would also feature a pair of schools that currently compete athletically in Class 4A.
The Eagles of Airport took on the Warriors of Indian Land. The previous day, Indian Land scored a victory over the Mohawks 1A Bethune-Bowman while Airport scored a close victory over another 4A team in the York Cougars.
At the contest’s conclusion, it would be the Warriors prevailing over the Eagles with the final score being 34-25.
Records
The Eagles began Thursday’s play at 6-7 following the victory over York the previous day. As for the Warriors, they have started the season with a 2-7 mark. The only other victory Indian Land has scored this season came against the South Charlotte Thunder.
How Things Progressed
Indian Land’s fortunes were good early in the first quarter as they jumped out to an early lead of 8-2. The Warriors were winners of the first frame which concluded with the team leading by a margin of 10-4 over the Eagles.
Airport began blazing a comeback trail in the second frame and it led to the Indian Land advantage being slightly cut. With halftime having arrived, the lead for the Warriors was 22-17 as the shots began falling for the Eagles.
Coming out of the locker rooms, it was Indian Land that began finding a bit of a rhythm offensively in addition to Airport struggling a bit to put the ball through the basket. The Warriors’ lead had extended back out again to nine as they maintained a 30-21 edge with one stanza remaining.
It was hard to tell what was more cold in the fourth quarter – the shooting performances of both teams or the December temperatures in MetroLina. That was advantage Indian Land given the lead the team had already established and it translated to a 34-25 victory for the Warriors.
Primetime Performers
Leading the way to victory for the Warriors was Skylar Young Skylar Young 5'6" | SG Indian Land | 2026 State SC . The 2026 shooting guard, who stands at 5-foot-7 led all scorers with a 13-point performance. All 13 of Young’s points came via the first half.
Santana Reese was the leading point-getter for the Eagles with an eight-point outing. Included among those eight points was her putting six of those in the second quarter whick keyed Airport’s comeback efforts.
Up Next…
Airport will be competing in another of the early games on the final day of the event as they will take on Fort Mill. As for Indian Land, they are first on the schedule for Friday when they match up against River Bluff.
A.C. Flora vs. Fort Mill
The second contest at the main gym at Rock Hill HS would also feature one team from the area and another from the Midlands.
The team in question from the area was 5A Fort Mill and the Midlands team in question was 4A A.C. Flora. The Falcons began this year’s rendition of the Winborn Classic in auspicious fashion as they picked up a win over Waxhaw Marvin Ridge on Wednesday. As for the Yellow Jackets, they were on the receiving end of a close loss to 2A Timberland.
Which team managed to run its Winborn record to 2-0? It would be the Falcons by virtue of their 56-39 victory over the Yellow Jackets.
Records
Speaking of records, A.C. Flora entered into Thursday’s play with a mark of 8-5 – and much of those five losses have come against other elite teams such as Camden, Gray Collegiate, Lexington, Military Magnet and Lower Richland – along with a two-point win over Keenan. Fort Mill began the day with a 5-4 record with two of the losses coming at the hands of Catawba Ridge.
How Things Progressed
A.C. Flora in the early going looked like the Falcons team we have seen all season – the one that defeated Keenan. The Falcons scored the first five points and throughout the frame managed to hold Fort Mill to only one made shot from the field. With one complete, A.C. Flora led by a margin of 13-3.
Frame No. 2 would see Fort Mill began to shift things in their favor. The Yellow Jackets had momentum as they began to put points on the board from the perimeter and near the rim. A.C. Flora saw what was a double-digit lead at the conclusion of the first quarter trimmed down to four as it was 21-17 going into halftime.
The third quarter had to be a flashback to the first quarter that was advantage A.C. Flora for much of the frame. Whatever momentum Fort Mill had in the second quarter shifted back to the Falcons in the third as they extended their margin back out to 14 and led 39-25 with three complete.
The closing eight minutes were about as evenly matched as one could get, but Fort Mill needed more than an evenly matched frame to overcome the deficit set by A.C. Flora. The Falcons win would run its Winborn mark to 2-0.
Primetime Performers
Trinity Delaney Trinity Delaney 6'1" | PF A.C. Flora | 2023 State SC , a Francis Marion commit, finished her afternoon with 26 points. The Yellow Jackets’ defense had no answer for her all game long, particularly when she made high-percentage shots and bolstered the Falcons’ rebounding efforts.
Terriana Gray Terriana Gray 5'9" | SF A.C. Flora | 2024 State SC led the early scoring charge for A.C. Flora and concluded her afternoon with a 10-point outing. Gray also displayed how quick she is with the ball in her hands and excelled in iso situations as well as with displaying her court vision and passing.
The leading point-getter for Fort Mill on Thursday afternoon was Reagan Reyes. The junior guard finished with 11 points and particularly showcased her willingness to draw contact and get to the free throw line. Five of Reyes’ 11 points came courtesy of the charity stripe.
Ella Marker paced the Yellow Jackets’ interior attack with a 10-point performance. Marker managed to not only impress with her scoring, but also with rebounding and overall interior presence.
Up Next…
The final day of the Winborn Classic will see the Falcons compete in the final game of the event when they match up against North Carolina-based Chambers. The Yellow Jackets will compete in one of the early games on Friday against Airport.
York vs. Bethune-Bowman
Next on the slate for the games that occurred at the main gym would see one of the larger schools in the state go up against one of South Carolina’s smaller schools. It was also – once again – a matchup of the Palmetto State’s Midlands against a team from nearby in the Rock Hill area.
It would see 4A York take the court against 1A Bethune-Bowman. The Cougars had suffered defeat at the hands of Airport on the first day’s games while the Mohawks were sent to the loss column thanks to Indian Land.
One team had to get into the win column and that team was York as they defeated Bethune-Bowman by a final of 41-16.
Records
The Cougars had got out to a fast 4-0 start, but have since dropped their last four matchups as they have seen Clover twice and High Point Academy once on their schedule. The Mohawks have yet to get into the win column so far this season.
How Things Progressed
Both York and Bethune-Bowman tried to out-long range their opponent as all but one of the field goals tallied in the first quarter were via downtown. Only four field goals collectively were made between the Cougars and Mohawks and a defensive-minded frame finished with Bethune-Bowman holding a 6-5 lead.
Points continued to come at a premium for both teams as neither team could get to double-digits on the scoreboard at the conclusion of two frames. A very softball/baseball-esque 9-8 result in favor of the Cougars was what both teams entered halftime with.
There were 18 points that were scored in the third quarter. All 18 of those points were courtesy of the Cougars. York had, by far, its best offensive quarter of the game up to that point in addition to keeping Bethune-Bowman off the scoreboard allowed the Cougars to up its advantage from one to 19 as it was 27-8 at the end of the third.
Primetime Performers
With 12 points, 5-foot-9 senior big Kymyia Brown led all scorers for the Cougars – and for the game. Brown particularly managed to find good open looks near the rim in the second half and also brought down a good number of rebounds.
Another one of York’s frontcourt stars, Kaila Lewis, aided the Cougars’ cause with nine points. What particularly made her performance standout was the confidence she presented from behind the arc. York made four triples for the game – Lewis had three of them.
For the Mohawks, they were the recipient of five points each from Chauntavia Haynes (2023) and Makaiyah Johnson (2026). Both were not shy about attempting 3-point shots.
Haynes also displayed how effective she can be as a ball handler along with an ability to get near the rim to make plays. Johnson managed to display how effective she can be as well as a ball handler with the ability to run point.

On the final day of the event, the Cougars will match up with White Knoll and Bethune-Bowman will take on Chesterfield.
Timberland vs. White Knoll
Here are two teams that are familiar to us at Prep Girls Hoops this season as it is not the first time both have participated in the same event.
Both 2A Timberland and 5A White Knoll participated in the A1 Hoops Report-hosted She Got Next tournament that was hosted by the Timberwolves this season. As for the Winborn, the Wolves scored a close win over Fort Mill on Wednesday and the Timberwolves were on the receiving end of a defeat at the hands of Greenville.
On Thursday, Wolves proved to be more ferocious than Timberwolves as Timberland defeated White Knoll by a final score of 62-35.
Records
Entering Wednesday’s action, Timberland’s record stood at 6-7 and the team recently came off a stretch where it was losers of five of six – including four consecutive matchups. White Knoll has earned victories against Irmo and Airport (twice) this season.
How Things Progressed
If there was ever a visual definition for the phrase “offensive clinic,” it would include stills and video from Timberland’s first half against White Knoll. The Wolves put together an offensive and defensive performance that overwhelmed the Timberwolves along with continuously setting the tone and pace of the frame. It was 21-2 in Timberland’s favor with one complete.
That offensive clinic and setting of pace continued into the second quarter as the Timberwolves defense had seemingly little answers for what was an offensive onslaught by the Wolves. While Timberland had upped its point total into the 40s, White Knoll was still in in single digits.
The lopsided nature of the game may have overlooked it, but the Timberwolves and Wolves were actually not that far apart from each scoring-wise. Timberland put 12 on the board in juxtaposed to the 10 White Knoll scored in the third quarter, but the Wolves still maintained its wide margin with three complete.
The Timberwolves managed to put 20 points on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter, but the margin was already more than wide enough between them and Timberland that victory was well secured for the 2A Wolves.
Primetime Performers
Da’sani Kinlaw Da’sani Kinlaw 5'4" | PG Timberland | 2024 State SC led all scorers with 19 points. She managed to penetrate to the rim on plenty of occasions and also was willing to draw contact to get to the free throw line. She had four made shots from the line.
Amiyah Ferguson Amiyah Ferguson 5'9" | CG Timberland | 2023 State SC had herself another double-digit point output as she put 15 on the scoreboard. She once again displayed how gifted she is as a rim attacker and a passer and was more than willing to shoot from both midrange and long range.
Zion Prioleau Zion Prioleau 5'6" | SG Timberland | 2026 State SC also finished with 15. She led the Wolves’ 3-point attack. As a team, Timberland connected on five of their tries from downtown. Three of those left the hands of the Wolves’ star freshman shooting guard.
Sydni Anderson Sydni Anderson 6'2" | C Lexington | 2026 State SC , the Timberwolves’ resident freshman big was a bright spot for White Knoll on what was otherwise a rough day at the office. She not only proved how ferocious she can be on the boards, but also scored 13 points to lead all Timberwolves point-getters. Anderson had no problems getting physical near the rim and will only improve as her career blossoms.

Timberland finishes its schedule of this year’s Winborn with a matchup against Gastonia Hunter Huss. White Knoll will take on York on the event’s final day.
Rock Hill vs. J.L. Chambers
Fittingly, of course, the host team would be the final team to take the court on day two of the Winborn. And its opponent would be a tough out from North Carolina.
Rock Hill drew Chambers to put a lid of day two’s play. The Winborn started off in auspicious fashion for both the Cougars and Bearcats. Chambers earned a close victory over Blythewood to start its schedule while Rock Hill won going away in its Wednesday matchup against another 5A school in Boiling Springs.
Something had to give in this one and it was the Cougars’ status as undefeated at this year’s Winborn that did so. The Bearcats defeated Chambers with the final result being 49-43.
Records
Rock Hill began play on Thursday with a record of 5-2. The two blemishes on the schedule of the defending 5A champions have come at the hands of a pair of 4A powers in South Pointe and A.C. Flora. Chambers began play with a mark of 6-3 with Watauga, Myers Park and 1 of 1 Academy dealing defeats to the Cougars.
What Happened Last Time?
The Bearcats and Cougars last exchanged pleasantries during the 2013-14 season – also during a tournament. Chambers got the better of Rock Hill by a margin of 67-42 in that contest.
How Things Progressed
Rock Hill and Chambers traded the first seven points each in the first quarter before the homestanding Bearcats embarked on a 9-0 run that upped its advantage to 16-7 late in the first quarter. At the conclusion of one period, Rock Hill was leading the Cougars with the score standing at 16-9.
Both teams put seven more points on the board in the second quarter and the Bearcats managed to maintain its lead over the Cougars. After two frames, Rock Hill had a lead of 23-16 in what was shaping up to be one of the more entertaining games of Thursday’s play.
The high level of competition and intensity between the two teams continued as both Bearcats and Cougars emerged out of their respective locker rooms. Rock Hill emerged out of halftime with a seven-point lead and it was ten with three complete as the Bearcats were in front 36-26.
Chambers mounted a furious comeback in the fourth quarter where the Cougars managed to trim Rock Hill’s lead to as little as three points. In the closing moments, the Bearcats’ shots fell through the basket when they had to and sealed the deal on what was a hard-fought 49-43 victory.
Primetime Performers
The victorious Bearcats got a 17-point performance from junior star guard (and team captain) De’Ashaj Crawford De’Ashaj Crawford 5'6" | PG Rock Hill | 2024 State SC . She played with a fearless attitude throughout with a mentality for driving to the rim even against taller defenders. Crawford also tried a few 3-point attempts and came through late with clutch free throws.
Chloe Hudson Chloe Hudson 5'9" | SG Rock Hill | 2026 State SC also had a 17-point outing for Rock Hill. Hudson keyed the Bearcats attack from behind the 3-point line as she had five triples for the game. The Bearcats drained eight in total as a team and she also managed to throw defenders off balance with her willingness to attack the basket.
Katie Reed Katie Reed 5'10" | SF Rock Hill | 2024 SC , a 2023, finished with nine points, but it was how she got the nine that was notable. Reed had the other three 3-point makes that Rock Hill had for the game. She stands at 5-foot-10 and is listed as a three or a four but possesses the shooting ability of a one or a two.
For the Cougars, Taylor Simpson was the team’s primary point-getter. She finished with 16 points. Simpson is versatile as someone who can play minutes as either a shooting guard or at one of the two forward positions in the backcourt. She also displayed her value as a shot blocker and shooter from the open field.
Bethani Overby aided Chambers’ cause with a 13-point performance. A few of the shots that she made were of the tough variety. Overby also managed to draw contact and take her chances at the free throw line.
Gabrielle Golphin, a 2024, concluded her game with nine points. Much of what Golphin got accomplished came via her ability to attack the rim. Golphin also managed to provide stellar defense and running of the floor in transition along with her ability to draw contact and find her way to the free throw line.
Up Next…
Chambers will play A.C. Flora in what will be the final game of this year’s Winborn. The Bearcats’ next game will actually be out of the confines of the Winborn – or any multi-team event. On Jan. 6, coach Kenny Orr’s team will take to the road to take on one of the teams responsible for one of its defeats this season – the Stallions of South Pointe.
