Continue ReadingJenna Hopp Jenna Hopp 5’11” | SG Glenwood | 2023 State IA has been the definition of a senior leader for her Glenwood high school team. The Rams have started this year with a record of 11-6 throughout their first 17 games and have recorded some nice wins up to this point, some of these include against #7 Underwood high school, and #10 Lewis Central earlier on this season. Hopp, the South Dakota State Jackrabbits commit, has been scoring at a high and efficient rate in each contest while also being a monster on the glass from the combo guard position this year. She comes in ranked #2 in scoring in the 2023 class with a season total of 436 points and ranked #4 in rebounds with 226, averaging her totals out to 25.6 PPG and 13.3 RPG respectively. She has been a great high school player with a great high school career. At the next level she will be a player that a coach can plug into their system right away and see results. She is a versatile combo forward who can also step in to solely compete at the guard position when a big line-up is in play. With the successful program she will be with at the next level I anticipate that she will be transitioned solely to the 3 spot where she can have space to create for herself or others off of either the dribble or in catch and shoot situations. Something that will be fun to see in full effect.
Kyla Mason
Kyla Mason
Kyla Mason and the Xavier Saints have been ranked in the top 10 of the 4A class rankings ever since the start of the year tipped. Coming off of a state championship a year ago the Saints have been in the same-type conversations all season long while beating some successful teams up until this point. Mason, a dominate and strong forward, has been making her case for having one of the best overall seasons from her position in the state. She is currently averaging 16.1 PPG on 61.8% shooting, one of the highest shooting percentages in the 2023 class. Next to that she is recording just under 7 RPG, 3 on the offensive end, giving her team more chances at easy buckets throughout a contest. Mason and the Saints are currently ranked 5th in their class going into the last few weeks of the season. I like this group, how hard they work and their chances once the post season begins but they will need to lock in and become more consistent if they want to finish this year as the top dogs in the class. The underclassmen are going to have to step up with Mason and make it happen, Something that they can definitely get done.
Jenna Twedt Jenna Twedt 5’8″ | SG Benton | 2023 State IA has been the heart and soul of Benton Community high school on the way to their solid start thus far this season. Twedt, a diverse scorer and play-maker, is one of the best two way guards in the state for the senior class. Comparative to other seniors in this group Twedt may not be ranked in the top 5 of many categories this year but her play jumps off the screen when witnessed. The Bobcats are currently sitting with a 16-2 record with Twedt leading the charge. She is averaging 19.1 PPG, and 3.8 APG while shooting almost 90% from the free throw line. One of the best free throw percentages throughout the state of Iowa in any class up until this point in the season. Benton thrives on defense and I expect that to be the case going into the playoffs. They play a certain type of way defensively that leads to their opponent having offensive issues, which then creates low scoring games where the Bobcats can take over throughout. Behind this strategy and Twedt’s play, this group could do a lot of special things during the post season this year with how they can stop other teams.
Halli Poock Halli Poock 5’6″ | PG Waterloo West | 2023 State IA has been putting on a demonstration of what it is like to be a dominate point guard this season for everyone watching. Poock, the Bradley women’s basketball commit, is going some places at the end of this season when she gets to the next level but before that she will hope to lead her Wahawks team to a state championship with the help of star forward and Oklahoma women’s basketball commit, Sahara Williams Sahara Williams 5’11” | SF Waterloo West | 2023 State IA by her side. Poock is the leader you want from a coaching stand point. She controls pace, works the ball from side to side with an objective in mind, can score at all levels, and isn’t afraid to be physical with the opponent lined up across from her. Coming into this season it would have been very simple for Poock to shy away from the spot light and just let Williams take over but that’s not what happened. I’ve been covering this team all season and every time you hear about one of those players, you hear about the other. I think that in itself shows off to every one watching that she is a serious player who is going to be big time on the D1 stage. Something I can’t wait to see. She may not get the chance right away to take over as Bradleys starting PG but with time, she is going to figure it out and be running the ship before you know it.
