Aaliyah Riley Aaliyah Riley 5'7" | PG Johnston | 2024 State IA
Riley and Johnston hosted a solid Ankeny team possessing some talented underclassmen and has played some other CIML teams well this season. The junior ripped the Hawks’ defense apart all game long, shooting nine of 13 from the field, making two 3-point attempts, and converting all three of her shots from the free-throw line. The Dragon junior also added five rebounds and two assists in the winning effort. Riley has been outstanding for the Dragons this season and is one of the most consistent players on the roster, which is saying something.
The No. 8 Maroons of Dowling Catholic hosted No. 5 Ankeny Centennial in a matchup of top-ten teams in 5A, and Zediker shined. The sophomore finished the game with 29 points, leading the Maroons to a convincing 57-40 victory. Zediker did most of her damage from the free-throw line, where she made all ten free-throw attempts and went eight for 12 from the field shooting. Zediker had a lethal shooting night that ended up being the difference in a conference win for the Maroons.
Erica Rust
The Harlan Community junior recorded a double-double in the No. 15 Cyclones’ 54-52 victory over No. 13 Glenwood. Rust scored 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Cyclones’ road victory over a top-15 team in 4A. Rust corralled a third of the team’s total rebounds and helped the Cyclones stay in the game by not being beaten too soundly in the rebounding battles. Rust’s ability to battle around the basket against good teams and win her matchups is crucial for a group that could compete for a spot at the Wells Fargo Center this season.
Kyla Mason
The recent Central College commit helped the Saints return to their winning ways on Tuesday night. The senior went 11 for 12 from the field with 25 points in No. 1 Xaviers 69-57 over No. 12 Walhert Catholic. The senior also added 12 rebounds in the win, earning a double-double. Mason did an excellent job around the basket, winning her rebounding battles and finishing consistently around the rim. She even finished the game with ten fewer rebounds than Walhert Catholic had as a team, which is ridiculous.
