One thing that has happened every season is that a #1 has lost to a #4, in fact, I have also seen districts get swept in the first round which is one of the reasons I use “it’s not what you do, it’s who you do it against” over and over yet many don’t and won’t ever get it
I’m looking at first-round matchups that could be interesting, here is the bracket for 6A Region III and IV
#1 Hightower vs #4 Cinco Ranch
Hightower
I’ve caught the Hurricanes a few times this season, on opening night vs North Shore and in the Peggy Whitley Classic so what do I expect? Much of what will dictate their winning will fall on Madison Bob Madison Bob 5'8" | SG Hightower | 2024 State TX and Chandler Caver Chandler Caver 5'9" | CG Hightower | 2025 State TX yet their supporting cast will create some problems as well
Madison Bob Madison Bob 5'8" | SG Hightower | 2024 State TX is long and athletic, she scores off the dribble as well as from the outside yet her ability to score in the flow as well as fill up the stat sheet will create problems, and she plays the passing lane
Chandler Caver Chandler Caver 5'9" | CG Hightower | 2025 State TX plays within herself and her poise under pressure as a 7th grader had me thinking she was already in high school. Her mid to long-range under pressure has stood out every game I’ve caught her this season
Nia Reed-5’7 CG [2023] may be the X factor because her defense can be smothering and she brings so much to the table, on both ends
Cinco Ranch
To be honest, I haven’t seen Cinco Ranch all season, I thought I’d catch them at the Katy Classic but that didn’t happen so here’s what I know
Holly Frith Holly Frith 5'8" Cinco Ranch | 2023 TX -5’8 G/F [2023] Frith can score from both midrange as well as off the dribble and I’m assuming she’s part of a 1-2 combination. She’s heady, does a good job defensively, and rebounds
Aniya Foy-6’0 PG [2025] Foy is one of the top 2025 players in Texas and her ability to take over games could pose a problem for the Hurricanes. She’s “long and athletic” drops the mid to long range and has good body control when she attacks the basket. I haven’t seen her in probably a couple of seasons but I’ve seen enough to KNOW
#1Clear Brook vs #4 Alief Taylor
Clear Brook’s Rezia Castillo Rezia Castillo 5'7" | PG Clear Brook | 2025 State TX is a talented point guard, how talented is she, well I dropped the #D1Lock on her in the 2nd grade, one of the youngest I’ve done that to and her court vision, as well as the ability to score off the dribble as well as with her jumper, will all be key. On the flip, Nataliyah Gray Nataliyah Gray 6'3" | PF Alief Taylor | 2025 State TX joins Castillo and Foy as among the best sophomores in Texas and she’s capable of going off in a big way. Some say she doesn’t go hard all the time, some are stupid as she goes after everything off the rim and overpowers players inside the paint, yeah I said it
#1 Westside vs #4 Cypress Ridge
This game could be interesting for a number of reasons. Olivia Shook-5’3 CG [2023] and Scejoanna Anderson-5’7 CG [2023] could definitely be a thorn in the Wolves’ side as both are capable of dropping over 20. Anderson became eligible in January because she transferred, not sure about this either way, yet if so, they are better than their record indicates. Westside’s district is not the same as it was when my daughter played there, well no district is because the game has definitely changed, yet their defensive intensity is second to none. They play hard from baseline to baseline, they take charges so. Neso Anisiobi-5’10 SF [2024] has had a BREAKOUT season, she is one of those “long and athletic” players that just bring it on both ends yet those Evans twins, Kaitlyn and Makayla, are both 5’7 CGs and their games have started to mirror each other as the senior duo always bring the JUST DO IT mentality
